I agree. A high end card like that wouldn't get damaged at all. If the card recieved that kind of damage before anyone knew how much it would eventually be worth, it would have been thrown away. IMO
From that small pic you can see the Registered mark (R) (on back, NBA logo in bottom L corner) is not where it should be.
With a larger clearer pic, I bet there's more signs. >>
I didn't know about that key...I only know the rules about the image and the color on the front...namely the little wing on the Fleer logo looks to be the right color, it must be one of those higher quality fakes.

Check out the link I posted. There's quite a few signs to look for. There's a few different fakes but that R should be in the pink area. I asked the seller for a bigger pic of the front and back and shared my concerns. I'll post any reply.
<< <i>The card has to be fake. It has been a high $ card since day one. I remember wanting to buy one as a kid in 1987 and it was way out of my price range. >>
I wasn't born yet, but have heard that '86 fleer sets were worthless until close to 89/90... or so I thought?

I could dig out my magazines from that time (maybe tomorrow if I can squeeze it in) but I'll go by memory and say your 89/90 range is right. Before that complete sets could be purchased for $10 and no one was buying them.
Had a few magazines that were within reach without having to dig and my price range is off a little but I do know that the 86/87 sets were offered at the $10 range as well. Like anything prices varied widely and if I can find some others to scan I think 1989 is the start of the prices going up.

Considering that complete sets with stickers were still trading for $8-12 in 1987-88, you must've been on one tight budget! The basketball market didn't really take off until late in the 1988-89 season. You could still find boxes on the discount racks into 1989...

I won't forget that moment, I did a similar thing to my 1976 Robin Yount colored the chipped corner with whiteout.
Now that I think about it i'm hoping I wasn't the only kid who did such bonehead things.
Of course I never attempted to trade my artwork to fellow friends.
I still have the Yount card to this day.
