1993 Select Dufex Proofs

Does anyone have one of these cards? I picked up a Ripken recently that I believe is one, but can't get SGC to label it as such. Also, does anyone have the big Beckett book and does it list them? I have the SCD Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, but was wondering what Beckett says on them.

Thanks!

I don't know if they're legit proofs- I've seen a decent amount popping up on ebay and the seller is usually trying to get $80 per on them.

Beckett big book (2004) has nothing about the proofs.

I don't think its an actual proof or progression proof of any type.
I think its a card that someone put in their lunch pail thinking it would make them
some money at a local card shows. The are called lunch pail cards not proofs.
My opinion and I may be wrong but I remember reading an article about that sort of
stuff happening at Topps especially with their Stadium Club brand early on.

Are you saying they would leave it in there and the back would fade?

I am saying that the employees at Pinnacle would put them in their lunch pails walk out the door
and then sell them to a local dealer or at a show.

I remember when these first came out that a dealer friend told me that someone
was walking around the shows with 100's of the two sided ones of each player.
He quoted me the odds of pulling one and it was crazy and was wondering how this person
came up with so many? I am pretty sure there is an article about "lunch pail cards" out there
    somewhere?

I just checked my Alphabetical Checklist Beckett and found this. I am not sure if its the same card
but it does have a promo listed as a dufex insert.

Actually, this card may be legit. According to the Standard Catalog:

"To test the Dufex textured foil printing technology which was used on it's Stars (1-24), Rookies (1-21), and Triple Crown (1-3) insert sets, Select produced a very limited number of blank-back proof cards."

    Select Rookies: 15X
    Select Stars: 20X
    Select Triple Crown: 20X

Whether this is one of those, is the question.

Yeah now it's just a matter of convincing SGC image
  • I recall being in a shop in 1993 when the dealer got the ordering info for 1993 Select along with one or two promo cards but I cannot remember now if they were blank backed or not. I remember one of the cards being from the red rookies insert set. Sorry that I can't be of any help otherwise.
