I bet if you cracked and re-subbed that card, 100 out of 100 times it wouldn't get higher than a 9.5.

SMR for a PSA 10 is $3000... lol

People put too much stock in BGS.

<<<According to Beckett Media Senior Market Analyst Dan Hitt, the figure is easily the most ever paid for a professionally graded, modern-era football card. In addition, it’s the third highest sale of a single football card ever recorded by Beckett Media, surpassed only by two different sales of an SGC 96 Mint copy of Bronko Nagurski’s 1935 National Chicle card, for $240,000 and $80,000, respectively. >>>

Let's be real here...what stops an employee of a grading company to conspire from slabbing some sweet grades to make some cash on the flip side?

Years ago when I first found out about grading the first topic that came to mind was how corrupt the grading process could be....

This is exactly the reason I don't buy into the Gem Mint hype $$, granted i've been suckered a few times over the years to buy gem mint cards but I pay for it and remember why I should stop buying into the insanity.

Glad I collect mostly vintage where gem mint is a non issue for me.

I watched this card get sold to Al Durso (PSAAL on EBAY) at the National last year. The card was actually graded at the show and the kid came straight from the Beckett grading table to Al Durso's table and sold the card. Al told me that he moved the card the last day of the show to another dealer at the National. I want to say that I saw this card being auctioned late last year by the guy that was trying to sell the 2001 Pujols RC that wouldnt grade by PSA as to not meeting minimum size. I know someone will help me out and rekindle that old thread.

I know we make fun of the modern collectors and this is a truly silly price but I remember the first 1952 Topps PSA 8 Herman Wehmeier bringing tons and now it sells at 20% of that level. Look at the SMR and you will see in 2005 people paying 20K for low pop 52's PSA 9's. I don't think people getting too excited about the grade/pop report is limited to newer cards.

Yeah, kind of like those guys who pay $5,000 for a 1986 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 10 just to be top dog on a registry.... That's just one example of the madness on the other side. Both companies have hard core followers, so let's be real about it..

    * Edit to add; I realize the 1986 Topps Nolan Ryan PSA 10 does not sell for that now, but it did back when there was a pop 2 on that card. It's the same basic principle as the Montana, though. The last Ryan PSA 10 sold for less than $1,000..

Here's the previous thread I started on the 1981 Topps Joe Montana BGS 10. The eBay auction was back in August of 2008 and ended with a high bid of $47,685.00, reserve not met. Looks like the seller or sellers were right to hold out because someone apparently got $65,880.00 for it. A quick comparison of the scans below. Everything appears to be in order. Though three subgrades of 10 and a 9.5 on the surface. I wonder if the card was cut from a sheet ... recently.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

coloring of the card looks weak. You'd think a BGS 10 would have super rich color.

    bgs 10 - LOL.

BGS cards don't scan very well because of the deep slab and the sleeve... maybe that's why???
  • i would stay far away from a BGS 10........more likely altered than not........
  • Do any of you guys realize what company 2 of the biggest card trimmers in the hobby use to grade their cards? I'll tell you for a fact that neither of them use Beckett to grade their stuff. It never ceases to amaze me that some folks want to fool themselves into believing they are "safe" with just one particular 3rd party grading company, when trimming is a huge problem in this hobby.

You mean like a grading company that also sells cards on their site and publishes a price guide?

According to the Beckett Population Report, a 1986 Topps Jerry Rice BGS 10 does not exist. I have to admit that I am somewhat surprised by this. But then again, maybe it is not all that surprising given the difficulty of 1986 Topps Football. However, if a 1986 Topps Jerry Rice BGS 10 were ever to surface, I would easily question its authenticity.

    /s/ JackWESQ

P.S. A check the Population Report shows that there has been only 1 BGS 10 card graded out of a total of 9582 and go figure, it's card #226, Receiving Leaders, which has an all yellow border.

I'd have to see that Montana 10 in person to be sure, but it's looks sheet cut from the scans. Just my opinion.

If someone wants to pay $65 large for a sheet cut card, that's fine by me. Good luck to them.

If it were me and I wanted to spend that kind of dough on Montana RC's, I would buy 200 PSA 9's or Beckett 9's (not sure what they actually go for), and take my chances on cracking and resubbing them.
