Legitimate PAYPAL chargebacks?

Can anyone explain to me what circumstances a buyer could file a chargeback after receiving the item (w/ proof of delivery) and leaving positive feedback other than to scam me out of money?

I'm struggling to understand why a buyer (a repeat one at that) would file a chargeback 3 weeks after leaving positive feedback and receiving the cards. I usually only deal with error & variation and 80's player-collectors who've always been very honest and prompt buyers but this guy has just filed a chargeback after several positive purchases from me.

What do I need to do to fight this? Any tips?

Thanks!

You should have the right proof of delivery - if it's over $250 you need signature confirmation, nothing else will do.

If you have that, the only excuse I can think of for a buyer would be "not as described". If he found that it was altered or trimmed, after leaving positive feedback but before the time limit for filing a dispute.

Some scammers claim that they didn't order the card, that someone hacked their acct - but that's a tuff one after a positive feedback.

There's nobody better at this stuff than storm888. That's who you need to talk to. Send him a PM if you don't hear from him very soon.

It might be coming from the buyer's bank or credit company without the knowledge of the buyer. Or the buyer has you confused with somebody else, or forgot he already got cards. Just provide all the tracking info and make reference to the buyer giving feedback and maybe PayPal will let you keep the money.

added to pad my post total.

If he claims he didn't receive it (and you didn't use signature confirmation but you did use insurance) I can usually get a copy of his signature accepting the package. PM me and I'll get you a copy. It won't help with paypal but it might be enough to convince him that he must have forgotten receiving it.

    Paging Storm....
  • Thanks for the input!

I provided free shipping and paid for delivery confirmation (total for items was $56) as well. Mailed immediately after payment. He received them in 2 days! Left me positive feedback for both items. Today I get notification that paypal has held that money. I re-provided the tracking info in the response section.

Anything else I should be covering? Any idea how long this takes? Since I'm pretty small-time, this $56 could pay for a few recent wins.

  • Hi, I had a similar thing happen recently. I called paypal, gave the del conf # to the rep, and he immediately put the money that was held back into my acct. It was a paypal thing, and not anything the buyer did. I've never had it happen before or after, and I have nothing but positive feedback over 8 yrs. The paypal rep was helpful, and quick to take care of the problem.

have you emailed the buyer and asked what was up?

That would be the first thing I'd do.

Request the buyer's phone number from ebay and call him. It's probably an error of some sort. If it's not, at least it will be harder for him to lie to you over the phone.

Yeah, I sent him a message asking what was going on but have yet to hear anything back. He has 100% positive feedback and pretty much only bids on a specific company's variations so I am pretty certain that he's a legit collector of these and that this must just be some kind of error like mentioned above - that maybe he isn't aware of it somehow?

Is the buyer claiming he did not receive the item; INR claim?

Is the buyer claiming the item was Significantly Not As Described; SNAD claim?

If neither of the above, there may be an issue between the buyer and PayPal.
You can contact PP and ask them wasup. (Often the buyer is not even aware
there is a problem, if PP initiated the claim.)

    ........

INR claims are defeated by proving delivery.

SNAD claims can be defeated, but the effort involved can be substantial.

Neither the buyer or paypal has contacted me today. I sent him a message asking what was going on (he left positive feedback a while ago) and I have responded to the claim through paypal (providing the tracking info that was already on file etc.). Hopefully this wraps up fast.

"...and I have responded to the claim through paypal ..."

    //////////////////////////////////

What is the nature of the claim?

    SNAD?

    INR?

It doesn't say SNAD or INR or anything. It says that the credit card transaction is being disputed. There doesn't appear to be anything actually from the buyer on the paypal claim.

He filed with his credit card company.

You are fine unless he claims it's SNAD.

PP covers you under seller protection for,

    1. INR,

    2. Unauthorized card use,

since you followed the correct steps in shipping.

Call PayPal on the phone, if you don't hear from them fast.
If they give you any carp, ask for a supervisor. If you don't
like the first supervisor, ask for another one. Eventually, they
are likely to solve your problem just to make you go away.

You can ask. Or you can read the thread, and you would know the answer is $56.
