GEM Elite, RGA, PCA

I used to think that cards in these holders were basically worthless, but maybe that's not true. Here are some recent sales on eBay:

2001 Albert Pujols Topps Traded Gold Rookie Card, PCA 10, $170

1965 JOE MORGAN TOPPS rookie, RGA 10, $150

1955 HARMON KILLEBREW TOPPS rookie, RGA 8, $150

1982 TOPPS TRADED #98T CAL RIPKEN JR, GEM Elite 10, $125

1978 EDDIE MURRAY TOPPS rookie, RGA 10, $100

1993 UPPERDECK SP DEREK JETER ROOKIE, GEM Elite 10, $100

I'm wondering why these cards are selling for such high prices.

They usually only become "worthless" when you crack them
out and send them to PSA to be graded.

There are many genuine collectors, or new people who have re-entered the hobby, that have no clue the difference between PSA and RSA and think "Hey a 10!"

(BTW--Storm I appreciate your work on the helping collectors avoid pack re-sealers and apologize for slamming you on the unemployment thread--assumed you were like some others on the board)

While the actual value of these cards after being resubmitted to PSA is weak, there are still a decent amount of clueless folks that spend big bucks for a "10" and are unaware of the fake grading companies.

One small company (GMA) even allows collectors to grade their own cards. GMA then puts those cards in holders for a fee. It's not too clear on their website, but most likely the GMA logo doesn't appear on those holders.

I hope you are kidding about this. Their are that many grading companies!!!!

I just stick with PSA, BVG, GAI and SGC.

That list has to be a joke or something.

Most of those are out of business, but you can still run into there graded cards every once in a while
  • Here's another example:

    1984 Star #195 Michael Jordan

Love how he says in the Jordan auction, he "thought" he had a $5000 card. Truth be told, he may have only a counterfeit and not worth 5 cents
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

I don't think there is any doubt that he had a worthless reprint. Now someone else has a $1200 worthless reprint.

Because alot of average eBay customer don't really know nonthing.

I guess that the unpredictability of eBay is a good thing. If every card sold for the SMR price or Beckett value, it would be a pretty boring website.

I've heard several card dealers say that "a baseball card is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it". According to that definition, maybe the 1984 Jordan card really is worth $1200 (although there's no way that I'd personally pay that much).
