Moon money, indeed, but that reverse is to die for.

I like toned coins, but that's a definite waste of money.

I would have to agree with you 100%

PCGS Price guide lists $55. I understand there's a premium for toning. Did the winner believe the date was 1921?

    Harrumph!

Just another MS64 Peace Dollar that has toning which is impossible to tell whether or not its artificial.

The way you folks kowtow to this crap its no wonder folks spend stupid money on something like this and then wonder where their investment went in 10 years.

A smarter purchase would have been a good solid MS66 in a PCGS holder.

From the results of this auction, looks like it's doing pretty damn good to me! image
Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

  • Without debating the AT or NT issue with this coin, I will say this, the price guides are whack. They are out dated in most if not all areas of coins. Personally I like the coin. I would be a buyer of it too. But, and yes, its a big butt, not ANYWHERE near that price.

Attractively and naturally toned Peace $1's are a beast.

I wonder how much the star played into the price?

of course it's a-t, but m-a all the same

  • #1 I don't believe the coin is AT or at least there isn't a way to say for sure based on those images but plenty would have you believe they know for sure image

#2 Since when do folks have to buy coins for investment purposes only? The comments about the coin not being a wise investment are inferring that the buyer just jumped in blindly to try to make a buck on the coin. I am not sure how anyone could know the motives of the buyer unless he jumped on here and stated it for a fact? The buyer may have simply liked attractively toned peace dollars and there aren't a lot of them out there with this type of toning to choose from so the supply is very limited even if the demad is lower then for some series.

#3 Do I think $1,000 is moon money for this coin.....no. I would have been surprised if it fetched under $750. Would I value the coin at $1000....not personally becuase I am not into Peace dollars but I think the coin would have brought a strong price at any auction venue.

#4 Are all the posters to this thread entitled to their own opinions.....yes just like the buyer of this coin......which isn't me by the way image

I think the problem with toned Peace dollars is that even when they are "monsters", they are
a pale shadow of a monster Morgan. In fact, I can't think of another series where the toning
on that coin would bring anywhere near 20x sheet!

I have 2 very similiar peace dollars. I am going to send them to NGC and see if they get the star. Pictures make ebay auctions although i would expect to not get more than 100 bucks if i had sold that coin.

  • A toned morgan or peace dollar will ALWAYS bring a higher premium then a blast white coin in the current state of the market. That is by no means moon money for that coin. That coin would have sold for that amount at any auction, heritage, teletrade, you name the auction house and that would have pulled the money. That peace dollar even at the price it went for could still turn a profit on a flip in the right venue. If you are not a collector of toned items then you dont know the market, therefore cannot really make any kind of informed statement on the subject image although we all have our own opinions making assumptions and acusations is really pointless.

  • What do you think of this one? I paid $390 for it. I know it was a foolish purchase and I have sworn off future eBay purchases after 7 years of wild spending.

I'm not going to say the buyer is stupid for spending that kind of money on a common Peace dollar. It is far better than the others posted here (IMHO). That being said, I would not have paid 20X list for ANY coin, no matter how pretty it is!
