All-Time Football Sets

I had some extra time on my hands and put together set requests and checklists for the Falcons, Seahawks and Saints All-Time sets.
I looked through the rosters for every year of existence of all three teams and made the minimum requirement to make the all-time teams at 3 pro-bowl appearances.
I got all my info from Pro-Football Refrence.com and the Beckett web site to look up the RCs.
I did make a couple of exceptions on the Saints team as Manning and Rogers only have two pro-bowl appearances.
Also I overvalued the Vick card in the Falcons set weighting, but I think the people at PSA will take care of that.
The only card I listed that I wasn't sure about was:1992 Wild Card WL Michael Sinclair #55. I pretty sure this is his first card, but not if it is his RC.
Hopefully the sets will go on-line during football season.

Did you count 3 Pro Bowls in their career or 3 with that particular team? Also, did you use a minimum season requirement? Meaning the guy needed to play at least 50% of his career with that particular team?

Nice work. I never did these teams because I could never come up with enough players I thought were worthy, wanting at least 15 players to make a set...When I submitted most of the other All-Time Team Sets, I used 5 Pro Bowls OR 3 1st Team All-Pro selections as the criteria. And also the player needed to have played at least 50% of his career with that team.

Some assistance regarding the card selections:

Sam Mills- has a 1985 Topps USFL card which is considered his XRC. To me, that would be his most desirable, but that's just my opinion.
Vaughn Johnson- Same as above..He has a 1984 Topps USFL card. If either of these players were to make the HOF, the USFL card would be the one going on the HOF RC set, as they are more valuable.
La'Roi Glover-has 8 possible RC options, are you certain the Ultra is the most valuable?
Chad Brown- Same as above, he has 5 choices..
Michael Sinclair- He does not have a card listed in the Beckett Ultimate Rookie Card Encyclopedia..Not sure how PSA will handle that.
Lofa Tatupu- Lots of options, do you know if the SPX is the most valuable non-auto/jersey/game used type card? Also, numbered to at least /999?

Everything else looks good to go...

Please don't take any of my comments as anything other than trying to assist and/or provide another viewpoint. You are free to request whatever and whoever you want in these sets. As a guy who has submitted many new sets to PSA over the years, I just thought I could provide additional info to help you put together the best possible sets for the collecting public.

Look forward to seeing these online. Long overdue...

    Hi Jason,

Any advice is always welcome. I'll try to answer your questions as best I can.
I went with al least 4 years with the team. That elininated a few players like Eric Allen and Cris Doleman.
For pro-bowls with the team only one player came up that I was on the fence about. That was Rickey Watters. He didn't get any of his pro-bowls with the Seahawks, but I included him because he had 3 1000+ yard rushing seasons with the Seahawks.
I agree with you on V. Johnson and S. Mills. I would rather have their USFL cards included, but figured PSA would shoot it down because of their listing in Beckett. I will send a follow-up e-mail to PSA and see if they go for it.
For La'Roi Glover I just picked one, they were all base cards with no serial #s that go for a quarter on Beckett marketplace.
For Chad Brown I went with '93 Ultra because all the others had no serial #s and this set was used for Michael Strahan's RC, so I figured it might be desirable.
For Lofa Tatupu SPx it is numbered to 1199, some of the other choices are under 999 such as Donruss Gridiron Gear and all the similar cards price the same on Beckett market place. I couldn't get the print runs on all his serial # cards so I might have overlooked a company with a smaller run above 999.

    Thanks,
    Tom

    Jason,

That's great stuff with the HOF teams, but to include some of those players I would have to knock the min. down to one pro-bowl.
I only had that low min. of 1 pro-bowl with the All-Time Bears because I bleed orange and blue, lol.
Once the sets are on-line, if any fans wanted to vote a certain guy in that would be fine with me. I just wanted to put something out there for three teams that don't have much going with the PSA registry sets. The Browns already have a HOF set and I think the Panthers, Jags and Texans are too young to have an all-time set yet.

Yeah, I always used the 3rd party "all-time teams" as just another reference point. Helps find guys like say Archie Manning who should definitely be part of the Saints set, but maybe doesn't meet the Pro Bowl criteria...I figure the more info you have to make your decisions the better. More guys to look into and learn about too!

FYI, the USFL Mills and Johnson ARE listed in the Beckett Encyclopedia as Rookie cards for each, along with the 88 Topps and 89 Score.

Good stuff, I think your thought process on these teams was excellent. Adding in your explanations, all the set selections make perfect sense to me. You can tell when someone does their homework and when they don't. Much like the Bears set, you put rational thought into your ideas and I think the final product is a good one. Looking through some of my own database stuff, here's a few more names that IMO, warrant inclusion:

    Seahawks
    RB- John L. Williams..To me, you can't have Watters and not have Williams. 4th all-time rusher..3rd all-time WR..Great player.
QB- Jim Zorn..Not great stats, but without him, Largent isn't a HOFer. Only Krieg started more games at QB (just 3 more).
WR- Brian Blades..581 receptions in 10 years with the Seahawks
CB- Dave Brown...All-time Seahawks INT leader

    Falcons
QB- Steve Bartkowski...All-Time leading passer in Falcons history
RB- Jamal Anderson...4- 1,000 yard rushing seasons, most ever in one season 1,846, led team to first and only Super Bowl

    Saints
RB- Deuce McAlister..All-time leading rusher in Saints history
WR- Eric Martin...All-Time leading WR in team history

    Jason

I'd add Jim Zorn to the Seahawks set, Steve Bartkowski to the Falcons, and Tom Dempsey to the Saints.

Just an update on the All-Time Saints team:

I spoke with Cosetta about the Sam Mills and Vaughan Johnson RCs for the All-Time Saints. She got the RCs switched and they are now the following:

1984 Topps USFL #42 Vaughan Johnson XRC
1985 Topps USFL #19 Sam Mills XRC

I have each set in a showcase right now until the sets come on-line:

    All-Time Seahawks

    All-Time Saints

    All-Time Falcons

    Hi,

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I started these sets with min requirements of three pro-bowls just to get the sets started.
I have no problem with adding players, but at this point you have to start the set and ask for the addition of a player from PSA.

    Thanks,
    Tom
