Saturday Night Rip - 80 Topps Football Racks

Well, I went against the boards better advice and bought some racks off of ebay. While I agree whole-heartedly that 95% of the time it is better to pay the extra 30% and buy from bbc exchange for the peace of mind. I think this is a fair gamble if only for the entertainment value.

I bought 4 rack packs for $23 shipped. Which I consider a steal. The packs are $10 a piece through BBCE. Now you may be saying, hold on a second there, those packs have been sequenced and there will be no Payton's or Simm's. Thats very possible but there may still be a nice sharp Largent or Fouts hiding in there. Plus I have a partial 1980 set from my original childhood collection, I figure with 192 cards coming out these 4 packs I should be able to fill most my holes.

So here's to a night of ripping and scanning. And maybe a few beers in there too.

Oh, this is going to be a blast. No star power in the first "pocket", but the cards are pretty sharp. Looks like T/B centering and "print dots" will be the culprit like on the Anderson Record Breaker.

Alright, hit my first HOF'er. Unfortunately, Charlie has some print lines running across him. Common through several cards in the middle pack. Check out Bob Young. He looks like he could drink a few beers.

How does PSA treat rough cuts in this set like on this one.

All the cards in the third pocket of the first rack were off center l/r. Thought I would share this one as its one of few game shots in the set.

    On to Rack #2:

First pocket, again pretty good conditon, l/r centering problems. No stars.

Well the middle pack had the same "sequence" as the middle pack in the first rack. Had the same Joiner with the exact same black print marks. image

Well, once again every card in the third pocket was off-center l/r including the Dorsett. image It seems that the only submittable cards are coming in the first pocket.

Well , I spoke to soon. The first pocket in this rack had all off-center l/r cards.

The most star powered yet. Unforunately everything was off-center t/b.

Largent! Sweet. He was about the worst centered in the whole pocket. I put at least 8 cards straight into card savers for PSA consideration out of this pocket. Smokin!

Looks like you got the card you were hunting for. Too bad the centering wasn't better. Any else after the Largent?

I have one more rack to go. was taking a little break watching the end of the hockey game. I also ripped an 09 Bowman Jumbo that I picked up at the card shop today and pulled a patch. Its Michael Johnson though.

1980's are interesting to crack open. I bought a box from the BBC maybe 2 years ago for $100. The payton is awesome from that set, great shot. And the simms and largent are also favorites.

i love early 80's football. I think that are some of the sharpest looking cards around.
  • I put together a complete 80 FB set from wax and cellos last year. It was a lot of fun. The Payton is my favorite (Simms is a close second). I was also a Lester Hayes fan and his rookie is in there.
