New addition to CoinsGB - Price Guide

As you now I'm always looking to improve my British coins reference website CoinsGB.com
and one such addition I have planned in the pipe line is to add a price guide.

I am in talks with someone that publishes price guides annually and it looks like I will be able to publish a 2007 version on CoinsGB.com. I think this will be a great asset to the site and useful to many visitors.

It's always nice to see a price guide online, which is so much more convenient than the tedious process of having to search old auctions and stuff. The people without Krause, Spink, etc on their bookshelves will thank you.

    Thanks LordM.

Obviously I will mention that these prices are for guide purposes only, are outdated and not to be taken as the true value of any coin. As you know each coin should really be valued on its own merit and at the end of the day is only really worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Prices can even vary within two coins of the same grade, one might have more eye appeal.

Some new collectors like to over grade their coins and think they are worth more then they really are.

I could also add it is recommended that you further research the grade of your coins and their values or ask a trusted coin dealer.

I think the price guide will be of some use to some collectors especially to new collectors and to people that have been left coins by relatives. As you say some people don't have books with coin prices and do not know how to look up auction results. It will give them a rough ball park value.

    Chris Perkins, perchance?

Yes. Very good guess wybrit. image

I didn't want to mention who it was yet as were still at the early stages but he has given me permission.
We just need to finalise the wording and I am obviously going to add a link for people wishing to purchase the latest price guide.

I'm very happy with being allowed to use 2007 guide for the reasons I mention in a previous post.

  • Great idea. Much needed!
  • Even if the prices are a bit out it will give a good idea of the denomination and scarcity or not etc available, great idea Hus.

I'm looking forward to this new development. Nice idea and I know Chris would support it. It looks like the 2007 price guide will be the final .pdf version, for reasons quite apparent.

I've been working on the price guide and so far I've completed up to 1935-47 Threepence's:

Thanks Hus, but I hope it's out of date, or else it looks like I paid way over the top for 1890 and 1902 1/2 d's in 66 RB. image

Well, many of the Brit coin prices are on the low side, but that depends if you are trying to buy one on the instant and are lodged in a bidding war for a particular bit. I am sure that some of you saw this to be the case with a few of the farthings and pennies in the recent Colin Cooke sale.

On the other hand pieces such as Wybrit's 1871 1/2d will go for cheap for a variety of reasons and are obtained even in a public forum at a fraction of the catalog price. Knowledgeable (sp? - it's late now) collectors do a lot of research and can turn up the good coins at reasonable prices if patient. Got to have the courage to let some pieces go on the faith that another will show.

Bottom line, these are but guides and not exact evaluations, which can vary by circumstance and time, etc.

  • I likey very much!

A couple of immediate things I noticed (sorry, it's my critical nature) is that copper is spelled wrong ("coper") on the opening page, and in the Farthing section, the information for bronze farthings 1860-1863 is missing.

I've only started looking, but so far it looks great! I agree with everyone else - this is a good thing!

    Thanks!

Thanks guys. Yes it is out of date (2007) but I think its still useful as a general guide.

I get a lot of emails from people who have inherited coins asking me for values at least I can know point out the guide and they can get a rough idea.

7Jaguars is spot on all guides are just general and prices will vary from guide to guide. PQ coins or nice coins with good eye appeal will be worth more then what the guide dictates.

For example I won a 1878 PCGS MS66 1/3 farthing last night, Rotographic Coins GB 2009 prices it at £50 in Unc no price for BU. I ended up paying $283.88 (£180ish) plus shipping, but I wanted it and to me it was worth it as it is the highest grade one of that date that I've ever seen or likely to come across.

Thanks for the heads up on the mistakes Stubby.

P.S. if anyone spots any more please let me know so I can fix them.

    Cheers,
    Hus
