Finally got around to submitting my Type B Washingtons

WindycityWindycity Posts: 3,472 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have collected Washingtons for many year and have gone through hundreds (maybe a 1000 or more rolls) of original rolls searching for high grade and error coins. Finally send a few of the Type B reverses in to PCGS.... overall, pretty good results.

That is dedication, well done. I get blurry eyed after going through one roll of anything looking for varieties, errors, etc.

Very nice on those 61's and 62's!

Dang 62's are nearly impossible to find!
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

<<I have collected Washingtons for many year and have gone through hundreds (maybe a 1000 or more rolls) of original rolls searching for high grade and error coins.>>

I was wondering if you could give us an idea on how common these were in original rolls? What per centage of rolls were live? How many type B's in a typical live roll?

I only went through two batches of original silver quarter rolls. The first were dated 1956 and every roll was live and every roll had several B's in it. I went through 2 or 3 rolls before the dealer put a stop to it. I didn't know what to do with them all. I immediately gave 3 away at my cost. The year was 1973 and perhaps the surprising thing is that 3 other folk wanted them.

The second barch was 1958. The dealer had opened the rolls and put them in a stockbook. Again there were a good number of B's there.
This dealer was happy I was buying.

I have found that most rolls contain none and when you find a roll with one you have a good chance at finding more. They are not common by any means.

You just re-affirmed the true king of these Type B's. The '62 had just a scant 4 more coins graded than the '56 (total pop goes from 26 to 31 on the '62, where there are still only 22 total graded '56's). Not to mention your killing the relatively scarce '61 pops, which HAD 33 total graded, now you made it 38...you just made almost 1/6 of the entire pops of the '62, and 1/7th of the entire pop of the '61's (and bummed me out in the process, as I have about as many MS65's, both PCGS slabbed/unattributed and raw to be submitted, so further up the '61 pops will go). As much as it hurts (as I had 2 of the 5 '62's in MS65), I have to give it up to you, and give ya a MAJOR thumbs up for making some really really good grades on some really tough coins!!!! WAY TO GO!!!!!

As an aside, what the heck happened with the '60? You had to pick the most common coin of all you sent in, for a measly MS64? (just kidding, I still give you major props for a job well done making those grades...even the '61 in MS63, and the '62's in MS64 are worthy of praise!)

I don't care how lucky you two get. I still think 1961 is one heck of a good find.
Did you find some of the years not in your submission list?

I have some 57's, 58's, 59' and a couple more 60's... but again, I have been pulling them from original rolls for years.

ProofArtworkonCircs, I agree with you 110%. Without a doubt, the '61 is still one of the toughest of the Type B's in any grade. Actually, it's the 3rd toughest, has been, and still is by a long-shot, (aside from the '64-D Type C, which is the real king, but technically it's a different type of these varities). My hat is off to the OP, as to get 5 '62's in MS64 & MS65 (with more 65's than 64's), that's an extremely nice score, almost worthy of a 'you suck'. When (it's not a matter of if) these get included in the registry sets, the OP will look back at this submission and smile. And again, that's just based on the '62's. I'll be loving when I up the pops further on the '61's in gem 65 minimum (I got high hopes for a 66), as the '61's will still be right behind the '62 in price (perhaps it'll take a bit of time, but after these are required for the variety set, and THEN the cost of attribution will be an investment instead of the almost-too-costly fee it currently is).

As an aside, IS the OP's submission results on these worthy of an official 'you suck'? I'm not sure if I have the authority to give him one, but if I did, I'd certainly give him one, as I feel he deserves one.

edited to change the word 'asides' to 'aside'

How hard is the 1964 type B to find? I was going through some of my better quarters and found a
    nice ms 64 or 65 type B.

56 and 62 are the toughest... 64 is one of the more common, thought common is relative term. You won't find many.
