Broder Cards From the Eighties

I would like to know more about the unlicensed cards referred to as "Broder's" that were abundant at card shows in the late 80's. Who manufactured these cards? Was it more than one company? Where were they made?

I have some of them, but I do not know much about them. Was the guy's name Rob Broder? I have some Cunningham cards also.

Interesting sell sheet. J. Thomas Specialties would just be one of many distributors not the manufacturer, correct?

I BELIEVE a Ron Broder put out some unlicensed cards in the 70's and early 80's and thus these unlicensed cards were also referred to as Broder's even though he was not associated. If anyone can confirm this and show some real "Ron Broder" cards, I would appreciate it.

As far as I know that would be correct.

There were tons of these in Florida back in the day. I remember one deal that sold nothing but these and made tons of money.

It was "Rob" Broder who created many of the unlicensed cards of that era, and he was later unsuccessful in getting an MLB license.

Some of his early issues have his name on the back. There were probably more than half a dozen other major manufacturers of these unlicensed cards at that time, almost none of whom identified their work by any but the most generic titles.

When I was working on the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards, I compiled quite a list of sets and singles. That information still exists in the catalog data base and may some day be worth completing and publishing.

And if memory serves me even though Broder wasn't the one making many of these the name just kinda got stuck on these sets by other dealers/collectors and that's why they were recognized as Broder's. But I could be wrong. image

Best card of the lot is Bo's batting pose where he's wearing the shirt that says "Turn Your Back on Crack" and the caption "Bo Says No to Caine". Hunter Thompson said "Never turn your back on a drug." So someone is wrong here.

    Caine??? Awesome.

There were actually lots of really cool cards from these lines. And they were fairly inexpensive to acquire. And they were good for increasing your player collection counts.
