If prices at your favorite dealer have not come down, is it OK to ask him to seek out more circulate

I consider myself to be a Numismatic Gentleman™, so I frequently ask the opinion of board members prior to inadvertantly doing something that may insult the coin dealers.

Suppose the prices that your favorite dealer charges have not come down at all, despite the deep and dark numismatic recession that we find ourselves in. Would it be acceptable if I very respectfully requested the dealer to seek out coins that are a bit more circulated (i.e., slightly lower in quality) than what the dealer typically stocks? Or is it better to simply keep the good relationship with the dealer going and continue to make regular purchases, albeit at less frequent intervals? Again, I want to be as respectful as possible to the coin dealer and don't want to make waves or have him cut me off.

Given the current economic climate outside of numismatics, I doubt any dealer would "cut off" any customer, especially just because that customer slows down on purchases. Either solution sounds sensible to me.

  • If you have a good relationship with the dealer, I would think he would want you to be a happy collector. I see nothing wrong at all with asking him to find a coin in any grade you want. Obviously, finding them may be the bigger issue, depending on what it is that you seek!

If you're a good customer, I'd think the dealer would want to be willing to acquire what you want to buy.

Why would any dealer cut off Mr. Longacre? That would be insane image

I suggest that you look at coins from other dealers that aren't afraid to realistically and competitively price their coins to reflect the realities of the current market.

I think a dealer needs to be asked questions such as :

Do you have something more in line with my budget ?

A little tact goes a long way in the dealer's shop.

Longacre- You need to hire a person to make deals for you. Since you do not want to get your hands dirty just find the coins you want and then send in the price negotiator to make the deal. I like to keep as much of my money as i can. If you a shopping at dealers that have a histroy of overcharging for coins it is time to find some new ones.

Tell QDB that some dealers are not playing nice and see if he will call them for you to set the record straight.
