That was when inserts were actually inserts. And being # to 25 meant #ed to 25, not 20 different other serial numbered sets of diff colors...etc.... Crazy price though

There are some hardcore '98 Donruss Crusade collectors out there. I had about 10 of the cards at one time, including a couple of reds. 3 or 4 years ago, a guy made me an offer for 3 of them that I couldn't refuse (seems like it was a hundred bucks or so for 3 no names). Who knows where that number would be now. That being said, that is an insane price for the Griffey!!

The Franks are in '98 Donruss Update, but they're spread across several products...but really, don't waste your time...the hit rate is 1 in every 5 cases for any color (green, purple, or red)

The Ripken wouldn't even come close to that.

This red crusade represents the high point of insert collecting and is perhaps the greatest card for a Griffey collector to own. This may not make alot of
sense to some people, but this set is just crazy popular, combined with the most collected player in the history of baseball...even more than Mantle!

While I don't think a Thomas red would sell for that amount (the biggest of the big Thomas collectors all have their copies already), seeing this auction makes me realize I may not be able to find a Thomas for under 4 digits...

This is the only one I own, and it's numbered to 250...not nearly as rare...but very hard to find.

That's no joke right there. A Crusade red Nomo would go for some pretty insane money, too. Can't believe the Griffey went off that high, though.

Did the last Nomo Red go for around $2100? Whatever it was, I think this Griff surpassed it.

In as much as I've always loved '90s inserts...there is too much interest right now to be able to collect them by battling it out on eBay...thank goodness for the bargain bins.

There are probably more griffey collectors than clemente collectors today, and probably more clemente psa 7s than crusade reds...supply vs demand.

It's amazing the impact of over production has done to the hobby. It's brought most collectors to focus on specific players. The price on the griffey is a good example. I'd guess the cost of busting 5 cases to get 1 of 100 of the Reds/others was a lot less tantalizing than buying the player you want straight up, in Mint condition.

Speaking of Griffey and Thomas, two non-steroid users (for the time being), I believe demand for these players will continue to be strong as more and more other sluggers/pitchers fall by the wayside with the release of pos. test results. Not many non-users left from that era.

I'm a hardcore Jr collector and have shelled out big bucks for raw cards and got them slabbed- with very good results. Paying THAT much for any Jr is silly, let alone a card #'d only to 25 is silly....

To most people in the world, paying more than a dime for a cardboard picture of a baseball player is silly.

I personally would rather have this card than this $4000 card



That is what is great about card collecting...to each their own.

I paid over $1000 once for a Nolan Ryan card limited to 30 back in the late 1990's and I would NEVER and I mean NEVER do it again.

No matter how bad the title or listing, these cards always get found. Believe me I have been out sniped on several lots that I was sure I would clean up on because they had a few big cards in them or were listed poorly.

I guess that I'm the only one not surprised by this, seems pretty normal to me. Not many other modern sets have maintained their value like this one has, crazy prices and high demand have been the norm for this set since 1998. When player collectors and set collectors collide. It's not just about simple supply and demand, it's also about availabilty. There are currently three 1955 Topps Clemente PSA 7's on eBay right now, over how many years have the last three Red Crusade Griffey's come up for sale?
