Although the auction market knows no top, is now a good time for me to apply for a job at Heritage's

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I got this email from Heritage. It addressed me by my (real) first name, so I believe that they are trying to recruit Longacre hard. The positions at their NYC gallery sound interesting, although it does not look like they have any US coin openings right now. I am not sure if I can whip myself up into the frothiest of frenzies over decorative arts on a daily basis, but you never know. Although it seems that the auction market knows no top, would now be a good time to apply for a job at Heritage, or should I just continue to read the Internal Revenue Code all day long at my office and lead a quiet existence?

Here is the email:

Heritage seeking top experts, opening NY and LA Galleries

Dear [name edited for security purposes],

While other auction firms have reported shrinking sales and significant lay-offs, Heritage, the world's third largest auction house, is adding multiple world-class experts to its current staff in over 25 different categories. These experts will, in some cases, head new departments and in others will enhance existing department expertise. We have positions open at our headquarters in Dallas as well as at our new state-of-the-art galleries in prime locations in both Midtown Manhattan and Beverly Hills, scheduled to open in late 2009, or in early 2010.

We believe Heritage's business model of transparency and respect for our bidders' time is the wave of the future, as clients are discovering us in record numbers (read our Mission and Values statement here). In fact, we recently enjoyed our most profitable quarter ever (Jan-Mar 2009), as well as the best April in our 33-year history as an auction house. Our 2009 sales volume will likely match or exceed our record 2008 numbers even as the other major auction houses report 60% sales decreases.

Heritage is now ready to hire the world's best experts to support existing departments and launch new ones, especially in the following categories, though we will consider many other areas as well, including sub-categories:

American Art
Ancient Coinage
Antiquities
Asian Art
Books, Maps, and Prints
Decorative Arts
European Art
Jewelry and Timepieces
Latin American Art
Modern and Contemporary Art
Photography
Vintage Automobiles
Wine
These are top, high profile positions; we are seeking ambitious candidates who will bring their excellent reputation, business ethics, strong work ethic, organizational skills, and knowledge to represent Heritage in the best light. Preferred candidates will have more than 5 years in a major auction house environment, or experience as a commercial dealer (a combination of both would be ideal). Writing and public speaking talents and skills are a plus. Job duties will include obtaining consignments; supervising the vetting of condition; authentication of properties consigned; reviewing inquiries; proofing of cataloging, essays, and advertising copy; marketing specific objects to important clients, and supervising two or more auctions per year with full bottom-line responsibility in the case of department heads.

If you are interested and feel you have the qualifications we seek, please email your resume and salary history to Experts@HA.com.

Please note: If you know other people who meet the qualifications described above, we would be grateful if you would forward this email to them.

Thanks you,

Being a renaissance man, Longacre, your breadth of knowledge in other collectables other than coins would be welcomed by Heritage.

I weep that Mr. Longacre must make decisions of this magnitude. Shouldn't you have one of your people take the Heritage position for you? You then have access to the Heritage employee discount while still being able to maintain your calm quiet existence. I'm sure this could be easily arranged.

Good to see you are getting back into your groove here image

I say go for it if you can tolerate living in any of those three locations. I received one as well, but I'd miss the beach on the weekends here in SW Fla too much, and suits and ties are tough for us guys with blue collar backgrounds...

We now know that Longacre's first name is Occupant.

Anyway, I suggest you inform Heritage that if their Wine auctions include rare, distilled spirits, that you are fully qualified in the vetting of condition and quality thereor and that you will bring with you your own overstuffed wingback chair, non-smoking smoking jacket, and snifter.

Yes please do. I need a new voice on my cell fone messages. I checked em yesterday and it said that one old message was being deleted. It was from a Heritage rep. I checked again later and a new voice mail from the same guy was there.

Well, I already work for them and I received the email, too.

As far as the future goes, all I can say is that, while there may be a "recession", they keep giving me more work to do! (Which is fine - more money to spend in their auctions! image )

Hmmm, makes you wonder if Lawrence Stack received one of those "dear occupant" letters as well. Odd that he has the same first name as Longacre.

  • I got the email too. I didn't look at it closely, so I don't recall whether it was addressed by name. I'll have to check again when I get home today.

    I once knew an expert...
An expert was a friend of mine....
But I surely am no expert.

...At least, I don't think of myself as one. image

I just checked, and yes, it was addressed to me by name
  • So let me get this straight... US coins is not on the list... so US coin experts need not apply?

My main expertise is in U.S. coins and selected areas of tokens and medals. As such I think that a job at Heritage could be fun and interesting if I stil had a desire to work in corporate America.

It might be neat to take the job, but I would not put my roots down too deeply in the New York City area. The coin market, the financial markets and whole economy in the New York City area might be due for a shake out in the years to to come. If I were running Heritage, I might think twice about starting a business in New York State, given its tax structure and financial problems. In the future Wall Street might not be the financial capital of the U.S., let alone the world. The center might be alone the Potomac River.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Wow, Midtown Manhattan? Does Heritage realize how many auction venues there are here? And you'll have heavy hitters like Sotheby's and Christie's right around the corner. Interesting....

But back to the question, why not? Hiring Longacre, a man of such verbosity, clarity of thought, and a veritable fount of collectible knowledge, not to mention being the keeper of a prodigious coin collection, could put them over the top...image

I would consider such a position, but I would need the accoutrements of my current position.

    A company Lexus

    A cafe at my disposal

A Kosher Deli and Five Guys within 10 minutes, and people to fetch said nourishments for me

Beautiful women in my presence all day long

A boss who respects me and is appreciative of what I do.

The ability to take a day off to go to a coin show.

Collectors Universe forums unblocked at work.

Seriously, Heritage would get more of my business if Longacre was on staff.

Longacre could improve Heritage as a company.

He could run the place eventually, and probably have a lot of fun doing it.

  • If you are considering moving to NYC let me know. I moved from Boston the end of 2006. Although it's city life there is so so so much to do and see in Manhattan and the rest of the city as well as up state NY. You would be amazed at the the areas my girlfriend and I have found, which you would never think of in NYC. Yes, at first the thought of moving and living in NYC was overwhelming but once you figure out the grid system it's very simple.

Make sure you are compensated though for the expense living here, the rents, and to buy, are crazy and shopping for basics increase a lot. In order to be somewhat comfortable you should be earning $100k plus.

  • I think auctioning great historical things is a really cool business. I also think its fabulous that a company can emerge from a small industry like numismatics to possibly give 'ol Christy's and Sotheby's a run for it someday. I think all coin collectors and dealers can take a bit of pride in watching Heritage vault into other collecting areas so successfully.
