1986 First Day of Issue $5 gold... First Strike?

hiijackerhiijacker Posts: 1,172 ✭✭✭
I have a $5 gold eagle in a postmarked envelope issued by the "Liberty Collection the Olde New England Mint"

Will PCGS add a First Strike label if submitted?

No, The "Liberty Collection the Olde New England Mint" does not carry any weight with PCGS in which they would issue a 1st Strike Label.

Well, that and the fact that PCGS only issues First Strike™ label for US Mint produced Bullion coins and Presidential Proofs. Heck, US Mint Commemoritives can't even get a First Strike™ slab!

I thought he meant a $5 US Gold American Eagle? Is this a coin minted by Olde New England Mint image

Hmmm, could be but if this were the case then the post mark would have to be within the first 30 days of release.

It would also depend upon whether or not it was a real postmark and whether or not the item was "sealed" in the envelope.

Actually I was asking if the OP was saying he had a American Gold Eagle he wanted to submit or if he had something issued by The Olde New England Mint? I don't have a clue of anything they may have issued?

  • Is this some sort of of SCD or something? Do you have a pic?

To clarify. This is a standard $5 gold american eagle issued by the US mint. It is in a postmarked envelope dated the same day as the first day the US mint issued these in an special envelope prepared by the "Liberty Collection the Olde New England Mint".

Since these were postmarked the same day as the first day of issue I was wondering if PCGS would accept this for a first strike submission.

Simply, no. I had one of those but with a $10 eagle. I threw out the envelope. It was had on ebay for less than spot at the time. If I am correct, it's not so much in the envelope, but it's in a hole cut out in the center of the envelope with a cardboard insert with the coin inside the cardboard insert with no protection front or back, right?

Yes. But it is postmarkd in that envelope, with a hole so you can se the coin.

In any event it sounds like it cant get it, so I will just pop it out.
