When do you think the carbon spots on the new or old pennies start to show their face.

I collect high grade linkys.. As I have chatted with a few already in my pms, I recently obtain 2 nice 2008p pennies and they are spotting up badly..

Now here is my question. Does this happen from the chemical wash bath the Mint puts them through? Or is it a natural reaction to the different alloys over time..

One more thing, is it possible someone could clean them with spots on them when they first got them. Then submit and spots return at a later time because of being sealed?

Thanks for the help.. Yaha J. Funkermeister...image

well yaha...it's not a natural problem inherent to the alloys leaving it to be an external exposure problem

yup...i would think if you find a spot free one a soak could neutralize the surface integrity of the alloys

i'm just unsure what is best for a pre soak...acetone?...olive oil?...verdi-gone?...mek?...alcohol?

Only those with black lung disease. Seriously, I've always heard that breathing or sneezing over fresh copper can result in spots. Something about the fine droplets of saliva reacting with the copper.
