1989 Donruss? Updated W/ Griffey Scan

How difficult is the Ken Griffey Jr to find in a psa 10? Anyone have any experience opening boxes and subbing the Schilling, Griffey, Johnson or Biggio?

Pop Report shows the Griffey is difficult in a 10 and the card stock seems very weak. I am thinking about buying some cellos from bbcexchange. Any experience would be appreciated.

  • Can I get back to you when my sub pops? Busted 2 rack cases and subbed a few.

I knew I could count on you to help me out. How many Griffey's did you get per rack case?

It still might be the hardest of his rookies in which to get a 10 because of the colored borders. Funny you should ask, though. Story time. About 10 years ago when PSA was getting to be the standard, PSA 10 Donruss Griffeys were literally getting $1500-$2000. (Remember that, everyone??) I bought a wax case for $350 with the idea I might make a small fortune. I ripped about half of it, finally realizing the badly off-centered Griffeys I kept getting were not going to stop.

At least it was fun. It was the only time in my years of collecting I had ever opened so many packs at once. Still is.
  • What he said.

The Griffey's seem to be tough on centering too. I have 2 orders at PSA with a few 89 D's in both. I think I subbed 5 Biggios between the 2 subs but only 2 Griffeys. I think between the 2 rack cases I busted I got about 15 Griffeys but oddly enough, no Bob Ojedas. Had to have help from a fellow collector to complete one full set.

What does a PSA 10 Griffey go for? I have a Donruss rack pack with the Griffey Rookie on top. The centering is perfect, the corners are sharp and should get a 10. The question is, should I open it or leave it sealed? I will try to get a scan in the next few days and start a new thread as to if I should rip it or not.
    thanks,
    Bob

I just checked. There's one on ebay for 80 bucks but completed auctions reveal sales of about $34-$35.
  • No need to rip it. I have a few racks with Griffey on top and I assure you if you look closer, you will see some flaking on the edges or whitening on the corners.

Oh thanks LSU..........Now you got me searching for it to check the corners and if it has flaking........

I am up for the challenge and ordered my cello box. I can send you a Bobby Ojeda. Are you sure it wasn't an SP? Possibly limited to 850,000 instead of 1 million copies.

  • I have what would be 4 complete sets if not for Ojeda. I'm telling you a PSA 10 would sell for a bazillion.

I bought no fewer than 10 wax cases in the year 2000 at about $450 a pop, hoping to hit a Griff in PSA 10 (which, like you said, was about a $2K card at the time). By the time the dust had settled I had about 175 raw Griffeys that were unsubmittable, twelve PSA 8's, and two PSA 9's.

Man, that was a wild time. I remember the 89UD was about a $3K card, the '83T Gwynn was around $2500 in PSA 10, etc. etc. I still remember buying an 82D Ripken that was a 9OC for $50, and having the seller email me and tell me that I had gotten 'a hell of a deal'-- which, at the time, it most certainly was.

I love the '89 Donruss set, but I prefer the rack cases over cellos... just my preference.
I have several graded '89 Donruss cards... (don't laugh!)

There are a few things you have to keep in mind when you consider sending in '89 Donruss:

Centering... Much tuffer than you'd think!
Print defects! ... tight white dots in the black edges. They show up on a lot of these cards!
Surface print defects... especially on the Griffey! You have find a PERFECTLY centered Griffey w/out the white print dots...
BUT... it may have what looks like black ink smeared across the face of the card (top to bottom.) I can't tell ya how many of these I've seen!

The Griffey 10 is under-valued in my opinion... easily found for under $60-70 on the 'Bay.

Best of luck! I hope you hit the mother-load with your cello case(s)!

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

Here is the only Griffey out of the whole cello box. Three Biggio's, one probably worth grading. Three Schillings with one on the top of a pack. Doesn't someone collect rookies on the top of packs. PM me if you are interested. Any opinions. Scanner was a little dusty, so the white flecks are from the scanner. Overall pretty sharp, but not sure of grade.

I'm no expert, but the one thing that stands out to me is the bottom right corner - it looks pretty soft.

We will be able to tell if you do something different with your scan. Rescan the card without the holder. Also, lift your scanner lid so that there is a black background. We will be able to tell a whole lot more that way.
