THE INSIDE SCOOP: Pre-Long Beach Auction - Low/No Reserve Bargain Lots - Conder Tokens, Coining Die

Hello Everyone,

Our Pre-Long Beach auction goes live at 10 AM PST tomorrow, Tuesday, May 26. Bidding can be done live at our Newport Beach gallery, by absentee bids via email or online via iCollector.com, which replaced the eBay Live venue.

The purpose of this post is to share some information regarding the bargain lots that begin with lot 135 and end with lot 189 for the coin part of the sale. Many of those lots have low or no reserve and I am sure some people will get good deals. I will feature a few of those lots in this post. These are lots that will appeal to the average collector on a budget, whereas lots 1 through 134 contain several rarities and high-end pieces. However, there are several sub-$500 coins in the main section, so you will want to peruse those offerings as well. For example, the Kentucky token that is in lot #1.

This thread discusses the forum specials and has images of the highlights.

Lot 138 - 2001-S Liberia $20, NGC PR69 UCAM. Only 50 pieces struck. This example is an NGC-certified PR69 Ultra Cameo specimen. Contains 1/2 ounce of gold.

Lot 144 -- Lot of Six Conder Tokens. Six Middlesex Conder tokens. Includes: Two 1795 Lackington's halfpence DH-358a, one with some mint-red coloration; 1795 National Series DH-985; DH-1012, DH-1025; and, 1794 Tooke half penny DH-1045a. All are pleasing examples. Note: There are a total of six group lots of Conder Tokens.

Lot 146 -- Steel Die Used to Strike Tokens. A vintage token die used to strike pieces that read "GOOD FOR / V / SHOE SHINE." An interesting artifact that should be of interest to any numismatist. There are two other dies in this auction. Take a look! Starts at $25 with no bids currently.

Lot 149 -- Large Group of U.S. Mint Medals. Est: $300 - $500. An impressive accumulation of 16 bronze medals, 14 of which were struck by the U.S. Mint. The other two are Franklin Mint pieces, including a Jimmy Carter 1977 inaugural medal and a 1973 Nixon inaugural medal--both struck in sold bronze, individually numbered on the edge, 2.75" in diameter, and weighing in at a massive 7.8 ounces. 10 of the other medals are approximately 3" in diameter and range in weight from 7.8 to 8.5 ounces. Several of these large medals are still offered on the U.S. Mint website at $38 each, plus shipping. Also included are the following: 2" Woodrow Wilson medal to commemorate his two inaugurations, part of the U.S. Mint Presidential series, a relatively modern restrike, but produced by the Mint from official dies, designed by George Morgan; a U.S. Mint Abraham Lincoln birth centennial medal, restrike; large Mint oval medal in the style of Grover Cleveland's famous Indian peace medal; and 2.25" X 3.125" plaquette honoring Orville and Wilbur Wright, restrike of 1909 version, dies by Charles Barber. All pieces have obverse and reverse motifs. If you would like additional images, measurements, or information, please contact us at 888-655-9255, ext. 104. Mention the lot number. Note: quarter in images provided as size reference only. Current bid is only $50.

Lot 179 -- Roll of 1894-O Morgan Dollars. 20 average circulated 1894-O dollars, all with solid dates and bold mintmarks. Some have minor problems, but overall the roll faces up well. Close inspection is recommended. There are two lots, each containing a roll of 94-O dollars. Current bid on both is only $100.

Lot 188 -- Complete Date Set (Minus 1799) Large Cent Collection. This 63-coin Large Cent collection is housed in a deluxe Whitman album and lacks only a genuine 1793 cent and the key date 1799. Filling the 1793 hole is a vintage electrotype Chain cent--not to be confused with some of the more modern reproductions--and has a value of approximately $400. The 2007 EAC auction included many early electros and they fetched healthy bids. Most of the coins are problem-free and pleasing examples.

Highlights of the collection are as follows: A nice 1794 Flowing Hair cent in G4 or better; an 1804 cent in AG, easily authenticated by the obverse and reverse die breaks representative of Breen Die State IV; a pleasing 1798 cent which displays choice, glossy surface and attractive coloration; an above average 1813 Classic Head; and a light chocolate-brown 1857 cent in VF, but with a few small reverse rim cuts (see images). The 1801 is nice, but there's an attempted hole at 12 o'clock on the obverse, and the 1811/10 has impact damage. A few other coins have small problems.

The balance of the set is pleasing with a few surprises within. For example, the 1817 is the 15 Star variant, and some of the late dates are problem-free VF to EF. if each coin were priced according to the CDN Greysheet, this set would total close to $4,000. Due to time constraints, we have not attributed any coins in the album, and the high bidder will have many hours of enjoyment examining each piece with the possibility of finding a better variety or two. Please contact us if you would like more images, or to arrange lot viewing at our gallery.
