You won't find much quality on the streets. Suggest you attend one of the auctions in Manila. They are held at least monthly (and sometimes more often) by the various coin clubs in Manila. Let me know when you're going and I'll hook you up with the right people.

I will be very interested to see what you pick up off the streets or from ads. I know guys who travel the country for months looking for quality coins. They don't find much these days. Most have either been cleaned or aren't stored well and don't hold up well in the humidity. Your point about Tagalog makes sense, although most wealthy families are either keeping PQ coins as hierlooms or have already sold them to established dealers. A side trip to Boracay sounds perfect! Have been there a few times myself, including a glorious honeymoon week I will not soon forget!!

Got it close to spot (normal bullion premium) from the Bay of E awhile back. I am a Philippine Expat and the reason I got that specific gold coin is because I started college in 1972 when martial law was declared (start of the Marcos' New Society).

Edited to note that you picked one tough year for US-Philippines coinage in just about every denomination. This is one of the keys I need for my Centavo Registry. >>

I got it from jetblack's website and it was listed there for a few months as I had been watching it for awhile and finally decided to pull the trigger since they are just so hard to find. Yeah, 1909 is a really tough year not only for U.S. coins, but also for U.S.-Philippines coins I'm learning. Havent decided whether I'll try to get all of the denominations of the USPI coins yet, but I'm pretty happy right now just having one of each of the design types of the year.

Well... finallly found a decent looking 1909-S Fifty Centavos at a local show. These coins in grades over VF/XF seem almost impossible to find! I will probably try to send it to PCGS someday (will have to figure out whether to use the US or World form) and if they don't hate the toning I'm thinking maybe AU55:

No. I'm thinking AU58 absolute minimum! I'd have to see it in hand to go as far as MS63, but from your pictures, it just might get it.

Like you, I also recently picked up a 1909-S One Centavo from JetBlack's website. It was in an ANACS MS63BN holder. I cracked it out and submitted it to PCGS, and they upgraded it to MS64BN. I think I like your PCGS MS63RB better though.

Edited to add: Raymond Czahor (a contributor to the 2012 Red Book) just sent out the catalog to his Mail Bid Sale XVI. It has a PCGS MS62 1909-S Ten Centavos listed with starting bid of $750. Contact him at cookiejarpi@verizon.net to get an electronic copy of the catalog. This is one of his better Mail Bid Sales, with a very large selection of Spanish and U.S. Philippines coins, but it closes on November 30th.

Thanks for the heads up on Ray's mailbid. I actually met Ray at the Los Angeles ANA show in 2009 and we talked about USPI coins for awhile and I got onto his mailbid list then. Definitely a lot of very nice coins being offered.

That is a pretty nice looking 1909-S One Centavo you have there, very nice color to it, well done on the upgrade!

During the Holidays I visited my family who lives on Maui. While there, I checked out one of the island's few coin shops since I was in town and had a few minutes to kill. I wasn't really expecting to find anything based on previous visits to the shop. The shop usually has very few coins on display and those that are on display are typically way overpriced. That said, I stopped in anyways... glad I did. As I expected, there wasn't a great deal of coins on display and most of what I seen was pretty boring and very high priced. But in the bottom of one display case I saw the following set in a very beat up plastic holder...

But even in that beat up holder and in the bottom of the display case, I could tell the coins were nicely toned and I had to take a closer look. Shockingly, when I asked the price I was actually quoted a very fair price, barely above the silver melt value of the coins. After a closer look, the coins were beautifully toned on both sides. Unfortunately, the Peso appears to have been cleaned (probably when it was first put into the cardboard holder many years ago) as there are various lightly hairlines across MacArthur's face and in the fields when tilted just right. The 50 centavos appears to be problem free. In any event, I'm glad I was able to find something in the shop, especially something this cool and relatively inexpensive.

After opening the case I attempted to get better pics of the coins as follows, but it wasn't easy to get the color to show well without completely washing out the coin with too much light...

Anyways, I decided to have that MacArthur set I last posted about graded. I dropped it off for grading at the Long Beach show earlier this month. Of course, with the new rules I had to do SecurePlus grading. Was pleased to see that both got graded, seemingly PCGS didn't think the hairlines on the Peso were as bad as I did. Cool!

The 50 centavos graded MS65 and the Peso graded MS64.

Here are the SecurePlus photos of each coin... not quite TrueView photos, but better than some of their older SecurePlus scans for sure:

Nice Macs. I think most of mine are bright white. Never had any luck with toning.

A couple of 1899 coins, one I had, one I have. Both are probably finest knowns. I am just having fun showing them off once in a while.

I'll have to see if I can get a good close up of the coin. It's a dramatic double strike/ The separation is probably the widest I've even seen on a US Philippine coin from the colonial era. There's a Commonwealth 1945 with comparable separation.

I'm not certain, but I'm pretty sure it will slab proof 65. I'll find out in a few months or two, when PCGS has its next grade-fest out here in Asia.

Tough to tell a 1904 proof from the 1904 Zerbe mint set specimens sometimes, isn't it??

Good to hear from you, khun Filam. And yes it is tough to tell the mint states from the proofs in the 04 pesos. But the definition on the toes, the detail on Mount Pinatubu, and the clarity of the anvil line speak towards proof.

On the back, the star are weak but complete, which could go either way. Complete shield lines speak strongly towards proof. But I'm going to turn it in to PCGS next month for grading, and let them wrestle with it.

Bought a 1903 US-Philippines Proof Set that was in an old capital plastic holder at the Long Beach Show in September and had it graded... grades just came back:

A few came out better than expected like the 5 centavos, a few not as good... I actually thought the centavo might grade higher, but overall not too bad! I wasn't sure the 10 centavos was a proof and I guess it wasn't after all. I'm also surprised the 20 centavos got a Cameo designation. In looking at the pop report, it looks like it's only the second US-Philippines proof coin of any date/denomination to get a cameo designation, the other being a PR64CAM 1903 20c. But it was the copper from the set being so pretty that was the reason I bought the set in the first place, even got TrueViews of those two:
