What kickers and punters should be in the football Hall of Fame?

EstilEstil Posts: 7,082 ✭✭✭✭
So far only one kicker (Jan Stenerud) and zero punters are in the Hall of Fame. You would think after 40 or so years of free substitution there'd be at least three or four of each by now. For those of you who follow football and know it better than I do, who do you think should be the first punter to go into the HOF, and why? Don't forget kickers, kick/punt returners too.

    Ray Guy. Hated the Raiders, still do, but that guy made a difference in favor of his team more often than not. Could boot for distance or kick OB inside the 20.

  • The 2 that immediately come to mind are:

    Gary Anderson

    * 4× Pro Bowl selection (1983, 1985, 1993, 1998)
    * 2× First-team All-Pro selection (1985, 1998)
    * 1× Second-team All-Pro selection (1983)
    * NFL 1990s All-Decade Team
    * NFL 1980s All-Decade Team

    NFL records:

    Anderson holds the NFL record for points in a single season with no touchdowns scored, kicking 59 PATs and 35 field goals in 1998 for a total of 164 points. He also holds second place for most career points in the NFL with 2,434. He held the record for several years after passing George Blanda's old record in October 2000, but was himself passed by Morten Andersen in 2006. Anderson held a record for 16 straight postseason field goals (broken by David Akers on January 11, 2009).

    Morten Andersen

    * 7× Pro Bowl selection ('85, '86, '87, '88, '90, '92, '95)
    * 1980s All-Decade Team
    * 1990s All-Decade Team
    * Multiple NFL records

    NFL records:

    * Most games played (career) - 382
    * Most field goals attempted (career) - 709
    * Most field goals (career) - 565
    * Most points (career) - 2,544
    * Most seasons, 79 or more points - 24
    * Most seasons, 90 or more points - 22
    * Most seasons, 98 or more points - 18
    * Most field goals attempted of 50 or more yards (total) - 84
    * Most field goals (50 or more yards) in a season - 8 (tied with Jason Hanson)
    * Most field goals (50 or more yards) in a game - 3 (vs. New Orleans, December 10, 1995) (tied with Neil Rackers and Kris Brown)
    * Most consecutive games with a point (career) - 360
    * Most games with 5 or more field goals (career) - 9

    Pro Bowl records:

    * Most points in Pro Bowl (total) - 45 (15 points after touchdown, 10 field goals)
    * Most points after touchdown in Pro Bowl (total) - 15
    * Most field goal attempts in Pro Bowl (total) - 18
    * Most field goals in Pro Bowl (total) - 10

    Andersen holds 2nd place in the following NFL records:

    * Most PATs attempted (career) - 859 (1st place: George Blanda, 959)
    * Most PATs made (career) - 849 (1st place: George Blanda, 943)
    * Most field goals (50 or more yards) in a career - 40 (1st place: Jason Hanson, 41)
    * Most seasons - 25 (1st place: George Blanda, 26)
    * Most seasons, 100 or more points - 14 (1st place: Jason Elam, 16)

    Also, HOFer George Blanda was a K (but most notably a QB I know).

    Lou "THe Toe" Groza, is a member of Pro FB's HOF.

    Primarily known for his place kicking, he did play offensive tackle for the Cleveland Browns the first half of his career, so not a kicker "exclusively".

    What do they say? If you done it once, you can put it on your resume. In that case, what about Doug Flutie?

    1. 58,179 career passing yards;
    2. 369 career touchdowns;
    3. 6759 career rushing yards;
    4. 82 career rushing touchdowns; and
    5. One (1) extra-point with the 2005 New England Patriots.

    For those of you just listing names only, why not post their kicking/punting resumes and explain WHY they are HOF worthy? For example, I can clearly see Gary Anderson and Morten Andersen clearly have the goods neccesary.

    I'm definetly curious to see who the first HOF punter will be.

    PS: Players who only did kicking/punting "on the side" don't count. Only full-timers.
