Man, this new macro lens makes shooting raw copper a dream.

Not only the sharpness of the lens, but with the ability to pull back and shoot from 2 feet and the resulting higher lighting angles, it is like night and day compared to my old camera.
I set the lights up once and did one shot per face; no multiple shots were taken for any of these coins. This lens makes things soooo much easier.
These coins are dogs (for the most part) but they really emphasize the character you can get with a decent lens. Some of the shots really have a nice lifelike 3-D effect.
It's like rediscovering coin photography all over again...

you either have a hole , or verigis in every coin...you will never get rid of them at any price above damaged.....so sorry..!!
what camera and lense are you using?
<< <i>Beautiful pictures.!! Unfortunalty, your whole collection is corroded and deemed worthless.!! at least by my grading.... I feel sorry for you in everyway.!! my heart sank viewing those for an investment..good luck to you..!! >>
I guess you missed my comment in the initial post about these being dogs. They're my dupes, throwaways, etc. (stuff that I bought early on before I knew better). It's what I had lying around that I could test.
As for the camera, it's a Panasonic Lumix G1 (Micro 4/3 system) and the lens is a Sigma 150mm. I initially discussed the lens in this thread, but the majority of pieces in that thread were slabbed silver. I wanted to try raw dark copper for this batch...

Umm, as he stated these were test pics of some of his not so good coins. I still find your comment rather rude. What if he was like me a collector of modest means and these were some of his oldest coins? I would never want to post pics here again for fear of being teased. I personally like every coin in those pictures, I don't have any examples of any of them.

His dupes are certainly worth more than your comments, that much is for sure.
Great photos, it's a shame Heritage can't employ someone that can capture the surfaces of old copper like you can.
Also, very refreshing to see stuff that more closely matches the type of condition in my collection! Not too much minty stuff.
<< <i>whats up with the 1804 half cent the whole is above her head but on the rev the coin seems misaligned? maybe its just me.....
It's probably a slightly rotated die.
Great looking photos. Makes me wanna get a macro lens.

I'll second this. How 'bout posting a photo of your photography setup?
"BlindTiger"... got your name right, you are blind, or illiterate, for not having read the o.p. Oh, and patronizing.

Ahhh- I just looked at your icon name
BLIND tiger!
can't read and definitely can't see that the coins in question still have a VALUE.
has nothing to do with MINT state, more like MIND set.

My setup is pretty ghetto, all things considered. Picture below.
The copy stand I bought from from a coworker about 8 years ago for $50. It's beefy and dates from the 1950s-1970s (not sure when it was made). Definitely *NOT* portable.
The two light fixtures are Wal-Mart clip-on lamps that were $9.95 each. The goosenecks allow me to position and angle the lights as I need. For those copper shots I angled the bulbs slightly away from the coins, so that there was plenty of light, but the glare was cut.
The bulbs (also pictured below) are 35-watt 5500K fluorescent bulbs, light output equivalent to a traditional 150-watt bulb. I know that Mark recommends halogen bulbs for the truest color rendering, but the heat that those things put out scares the bejesus out of me. This is a viable alternative (in my opinion). If you're looking for more light output, the 5500K bulbs are also available in a 50-watt version (equivalent to a 200-watt bulb).
The 5500K fluorescents are pretty tough to find; the 2700K (poor for coin photos) and 6500K (Daylight, have not tried these) are more common.
As you can see, there's a lot of ambient light, so I only do my shooting at night.

<< <i>Not that I cared for what BlindTiger said, but..it is not bad to see disparity . >>
Fine, then may I be the first to disparage BlindTiger by suggesting it is time to change his icon?
Here's a couple suggested alternatives...
However, if he would prefer to switch to something more in line with his character, here's a couple more suggestions...
I am sure that you are in hearty agreement with me that disparaging Blind Tiger "is not bad", and I am sure he will appreciate it as well.

The photos are fantastic and you have brought out some real character the makes those otherwise junk very fun and collectible.

Also I find it of note that you often have some of the most original coins in the dealers junk bins. Due to a hole or dent no one bothered trying to improve it with dips/ scrubs ect. Not a bad place to find out and learn what to look for on what unmolsted age really does to coins.

Die alignment is proper. Hole must have been drilled at an extreme angle. Possible also that it's actually a wormhole, whose other end just happens to be at another location on the exact same coin. Don't mess with me, I'm a physicist.

*chuckle*
It's a rotated die. I rotated the bottom image to preserve the orientation of the readability/presentation rather than the orientation of the hole.
