Denver Coin Expo Newps / Report plus a few pics

One of the nice things about moving back to Colorado is that I get to attend a better show than MOON or Northwest Expo. There were lots of tables. As for "darkside" pickings, well, they were sparse.

I met up with a few dealers who had some nice bits. I picked up the following (all raw except where noted):

Farthings: 1826, 1912 and 1914. Even though I don't collect George IV (IIII), I've been wanting a decent example of the Britannia and lion reverse and found a good brown one at what I believe to be an excellent price. The 1912 and 1914 are nothing to write home about, but the latter was needed to fill a hole until a better example of the BRIT T version can be found.

Halfpennies: none

Pennies - I thought I had stopped collecting them! Well, I found an 1892 in RB UNC and an 1881 in lovely brown and simply couldn't pass them up. I will own them for a while, if for no other reason than to upgrade the "virtual" penny collection.

Threepences: none. Most of the UNCs I saw either weren't or were cleaned/whizzed. image

Sixpences: none. There really were very few nice sixpences about. Some were available but I had better examples in every case.

Shillings: picked up an 1874 graded NGC MS64 with beautiful toning, apparently sold raw previously by Karl Stephens. I think the hits make the grade fall short of 64, but it is still very appealing. I also picked up a raw low-level UNC 1878, which I did not have as a date until now.

Florins: picked up a gVF 1908, a date I have never owned. I will add it to the "virtual" collection and then probably move it on.

Halfcrowns: picked up a 1961 BU, since it was thrown in for free.

I also met another forum member - keifercoins. He lives here now and had a table set up. He had some nice pieces, but unfortunately nothing I needed. I would have liked to kick some business his way. He is a very personable chap.

Another seller showed me his 1862 halfpenny with the "C" die. He found it in a 20 cent junkbox!! Pretty cool find on his part. He apparently knew me by reputation (from looking at my website) and as I passed by his table a second time yelled out "Hey wybrit!" and pulled out the 1874 shilling. I hope to do more business with him in the future - he knows his British.

A few pictures are now posted. Friday marked the day of my first new NGC slab. Pros: easier to photograph, nice to see the rims. Cons: those very annoying tabs. For me, the jury is out on whether I like these better.

    Wybrit:

    Terrific pictures!

nice coins- I like the die numbers.

I have chatted briefly with Cameron when he was a grader at ICG. He has a great future ahead of him in numismatics.
