Thoughts on Vending boxes

BBCE has some nice 80's unopened vending boxes and I was thinking about buying a run of a few years. What are everyone's thoughts on these? Condition of cards, value, star card/rookie card likelihood, etc...

In particular, they have some '80 Topps vending boxes that are shrinkwrapped. Why are they less than half the price of a wax box?

I bought several 85 and 87 topps vending boxes from bbce. I was very happy with the condition of the cards. There was some centering issues with a couple of the boxes but the corners and edges were in good shape. I believe Steve shrink raps the higher end vending boxes. I don't think it came from the factory that way.
  • I'll second that. Topps did not shrink wrap vending boxes in the 80's

I will be buying a 1980 vending box when I get my tax refund check. Maybe something else too.

Vending is usually hit or miss. It's very easy for the cards inside to be damaged since they sit so tight to the box, there's no wrapper to cushion any rough treatment. And that they aren't sealed makes it possible to search, although it is is pretty easy to tell if the cards have been picked through.

But if you get a good box, they are cheap enough for the above reasons to make it a ver good deal. I just picked up a box of 81 Topps from Steve the other day that had some good cards, some with centering issues, and some with dinged corners where the box had been dropped, but for $35, it was worth the investment.

I purchased an 84 Fleer Vending Box from D&A a few years ago, and the cards came out in amazing shape. Landed a possible 10 Mattingly, just too lazy to send it in. Also, its amazing to see how white the borders are compared to a set kept in a smoke filled home (not mine). Makes you sick to think what you are inhaling.

I bought a couple of 83 Topps vending boxes from Steve a month or two ago and was very disappointed. The cards were not aligned uniformly in the box. Some were out of alignment towards the front of the box and some were out of alignment towards the back of the box. Probably 95% had corner dings. I'm confident they weren't tampered with. Just luck of the draw. Although the price was right ($49 each), I'm sticking with rack and then wax from now on.

Rack is definitely where it's at.

My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 2 (2003). My son was diagnosed with Type 1 when he was 17 on December 31, 2009. We were stunned that another child of ours had been diagnosed. Please, if you don't have a favorite charity, consider giving to the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation)

I bought an 84 topps bb vending box a few months back from bbce and was very disappointed. Your box sounds exactly like the one I got. From what Ive seen, it is truly hit or miss with vending.
