Coin shop robbery Wed. 5/13/09 - Salem, OR

Capital Coin Shop in Salem, Oregon was robbed Wednesday morning, May 13, 2009.

Two white males in their late 20's-early 30's, 6'2 & 6'5, both w/dark complexion & long sideburns.

Art was tasered and then handcuffed while they ransacked the store.

Among the stolen items:

1893-CC SEGS MS-66 $1

8-PCGS MS64 $20 St.G

3-PCGS MS63 $20 St.G

10-PCGS MS63 $10 Lib

several BU $1 rolls

Boxes of common silver dollars in 2x2's

    I am just south of Salem in Grants Pass. That is not cool. Its a shame there are people out there like this. They shouldn't be to hard to find when looking for 2 men that tall walking together.

    Suprised to see this on the news this morning. The owner is a nice guy that I have purchased coins from before. His shop is sort of tucked away in a very low traffic area. Hopefully the local dealers will keep a eye out for the scum bags that did this. I'm sure they will.

    Similar situation involving a tasering happened in IL a while back, a dealer was hit the morning of a show. There's still a thread here about it I believe.

    If this is who I am thinking it is, Art is one of the good guys. Great guy to work with and I seem him frequently at CA shows. I sure hope he is doing ok. That just sucks.

    I just spoke with Art's grandson (since Art was busy the Salem PD sketch artist) and he told me of some other particular items taken:

    50-piece set of Harley-Davidson 1-oz. silver rounds, each different, commemorating 50 years of H-D motorcycles (1959-2008?)

    40- 1 oz. Stillwater Palladium bullion coins

    Many nice gold nuggets

    All of the gold jewelry

    All 3-ring notebook binders of coins in 2x2's (From Large Cents thru Kennedy Halves)

    3 Double Row boxes of Morgan & Peace Dollars in 2x2's, grading G- MS63 (mostly VF-MS60+)


    Apparently one or both suspects had visited the store on Tuesday and purchased a cheap coin (while casing the situation.)

    As the Statesman newspaper article indicated, about 200 lbs of inventory was stolen. Those 3-ring binders and double row boxes account for much of this weight.

    Hopefully these thieves will be apprehended and brought to justice! (Where's Willie's Great-Grandpappy?)

    Darn-I hate to see that happen in this neck of the woods.
    I have purchased several coins from Art over the years at local coin shows.
    Hope they catch a brake in the case.

    That taser can be tough on the elderly. Sounds like Art made it trough that experience OK. Wonder if the tall duo were methamphetamine addicts.

    Its so hard to tell if somebody is being serious or kidding around when it comes to text on a message board. But I hope you are joking because I was not serious with my comment earlier. It was a joke. I was more joking about how tall they are. I was not serious that the only 2 tall people walking together are the thiefs.

    Art wears a sidearm. When he bent down to get the customers (crooks) a belt buckle, his gun was exposed, they took it then handcuffed him.
