Do any of the rest of you like to read back issues of sports card magazines (like Beckett)?

I currently own a complete set of baseball Becketts from 1988-96 and football Becketts from issue #1 to #100 (Dec 1989-mid 1998). I've lately been reading my football Becketts for the first time (I've been into baseball cards since 1993 and complete sets since 1999; I didn't get into football cards until 2007) and I'm finding it interesting reading about what the hobby as well as the sport in general was like back then. Did you know even back then people were complaining about too many sets out in a year and the high cost of inserts and packs driving kids away from the hobby? Another thing I found interesting was due to legal conflicts with NFL Properties and NFLPA, there were some superstar players omitted completely from the 1992 sets (if I'm not mistaken, Joe Montana does not appear in 1992 Topps for example). Basically, I think it's awesome to read back issues of Beckett back in the 80s/90s when they were practically THE hobby publication.

Anyone else here enjoy reading back issues of sports card publications? If so, which ones and why? Personally I'd love to also read the Baseball Cards Magazine that was around in the late 80s/early 90s as well as start a run of basketball Becketts someday.

  • Theres a stack of back issues of Beckett and Tuff Stuff in every bathroom in my house. That articles are sweet and particularly the pricing of cards. To keep things positive, vintage was the best invement back in the eighties and nineties. I dont think that has changed.

I don't suppose you'd be willing to part with your 1997-99 baseball Becketts would you (as well as 1987)? If so, turn on your PM feature and we can discuss details.

I remember always wanting to buy those 1975 rack packs back in the late 80's that seemed to be pictured in every issue. I think they were $25-30 each without stars showing. I think Mike posted the pic here before. But as a kid I never got any. I did get a 1988 Topps traded set for Christmas though....

I always read back issues of Becketts, Tuff Stuffs, SCD, Baseball Cards, and Sports Card Trader. Tons of great information

The thing is though, I'm only into Becketts and other publications from the 80s/90s (and in baseball cards, with the exception of my Topps baseball/football runs, I only go up to 1995-96). I hope no one here thinks I'm stuck in the past of something... But other than the Heritage series, I don't think I'm missing that much from this decade, or am I?

I too love reading old Becketts, SCD's and Tuff Stuff. I miss the days when it would take me a day or two to read SCD and paw through all the ads. That was how I priced some hard to find items back in the day.

A friend at work just recently gave me his card collection (mostly early to mid 90's hockey and some baseball) and a bunch of old Becketts. They are all hockey, but still some cool reading.

Does anyone remember Collectors Sportslook? It was like a cross of Beckett and Mad magazine.
    Looking for Carl Willey items.
  • I just signed up for a subscription to Old Cardboard. After my first issue arrived and I read itI then went and order all their back issues.

Anybody here have any of the old Baseball Cards Magazines from the mid-80s to early 90s? I had three copies with Don Mattingly on the cover and thought they were pretty sweet.

I've got some Baseball Card magazines. I'm trying to learn how to use a different scanner, so I practiced on this Issue #1 of the Topps Magazine from Winter 1990. (I've got the first 12 issues of that magazine.) I'll try to scan some other old magazines I have, including the BBC mags. It's fun going back through them. The reading does put/keep things in perspective...

I was recently leafing through my Beckett Issue #2 with Ripken on the cover, when I had them out to take a pic of my collection. Some pretty interesting prices in there! image

Nice collection of Ripken covers! I should document the Kirby covers like that to help keep track of what I have and what I need. Great idea. It also makes for a fun Windows Wallpaper!

Here's a couple more magazine covers I found in my PhotoBucket scans:

(Sorry to have hijacked your thread, Estil! We'll have to start another...)

Gotta work on a getting a better pic, but this'll have to do for now. I've got Kirby magazines and articles stashed in several boxes. I happened to find these in a 3-ring binder up in my closet:

I like to read the few earlier football Becketts I have as well. Interesting how the magazin has changed but not really in a good way. I miss the glossy cover that had some great action shots and the player profiles and stories. They did a good job of blending the hobby w/ the sport. I don't see that in Beckett any more.
