Cool find, picked up 2 - 1905-o micro o dimes today
I found a dealer that had 4, 3 were in pretty nice condition (strong fine to ef). I bought the ef and the f. He wouldn't let me have all three (he's a great dealer friend but has a tendency to really like some of his own stuff). Oh well, 2 is better than none.
I had never seen a real live 1905 micro O before, in over 10 years of looking. Perhaps I've been unlucky in past searching, perhaps I've been asleep at the wheel, but it was great to see one after another in the box.

<< <i>Are there normal mintmarks on other Barber coins (quarters?) that are smaller than those used on the dimes? If not, it seems strange to have a "single use" mintmark punch, unless it was dropped and damaged after use on that reverse die. >>
I think the micro O was inadvertent use of an O from a different denomination. I'd have to go back to the book to get the straight poop, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is. It may be that the quarter mintmark was actually smaller than the dime because of the space below the tail where it was placed was so small.
intended for the quarter. I don't agree. The "O" on the quarter
is noticably wider than the micro-O mm.
I've been saving this variety for 12+ years. In the early days of
eBay a big fraction of the micro-O dimes were merely listed as
generic 1905-O dimes. Today it is rare to find the coin unattributed.
Power of the internet!
For years I valued the variety at roughly 4 times that of the non-micro.
Just lately has PCGS included the coin seperatly in their price guides and
they value the 1905-O micro-O at roughly 10 times the standard issue.
I've recently begun slabbing some of my coins and presently have plastic
reading 25, 30, 40 and 53. Thought I'd put together a grading set G-AU.
Now there is a multi-year challenge!

Steve, I know you watch the same auctions I do and we've run each other up on unattributed micro-O dimes on the 'Bay in the past. I have to gently disagree with your statement above about not finding them unattributed. In the time I've been hunting them, I'd say one turns up on eBay unattributed roughly every other week, and that pace has not slacked at all over the last few months. Most of the ones I see now are in very low grades, I think the nicest I've snagged wound up in a VG-10 PCGS slab. But there are still some out there hiding if you look.
