I have been using them for about 6 months. I haven't found any problems with the seated quarters I have been storing in them.

I put old circulated coins that already have a patina on them or have been cleaned. I don't know what would happen with newer blast white types.

The potential issue would be outgassing of the adhesive. It could take a long time to see if that causes any damage.

While I'm tempted... there's something about the "glue" that makes me think the coins might AT in them.

These are meant to replace stapled flips. I would much rather take my chances with glue than staples. I doubt the volatiles in the glue are a: very volatile in this type of glue or b: sulfurous. --Jerry

If these are like the self sealer holders that I've seen before, you'll need a special pen like a Sharpie to label these holders.

The 'original' manufacturer of the self-adhesive 2x2 coin holders, Hudgeon's Manufacturing Co. of Cleveland, OH, went out of business several years ago, and their products are no longer available. The patent they had on such self-adhesive holders has also run out. Accordingly, there are now a couple of manufacturers of self-adhesive 2x2 holders currently offering similar products. The holders to which PerryHall refers (Day Mount), while similar, place the Mylar windows on the outside of the holder, rather than on the inside, as with the original Hudgeons holders and the "Supersafe" holders offered by Wizard Supply. Presumably this eliminates the need for the user to apply the individual Mylar windows to each holder, but while eliminating a step, as PerryHall points out, the entire outside of the holder is Mylar, and does not readily accept writing from a pen or pencil. It requires a "Sharpie" indelible pen, making notes on the holder difficult at best.

I have used the original Hudgeon's holders for nearly thirty years now without any problems whatsoever. It has become difficult to locate supplies of the old Hudgeon's holders in dime size (they never made a half dime sized holder) in recent years so I have changed to using these "SuperSafe" holders, and they appear to be just as safe. I can only point to my own experience, but I have some half dimes that were placed in these holders in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and none have shown any sign of discoloration or problems due to the adhesive used. Indeed, the coins in these holders have not changed at all, as the holders are as close to air-tight as any holder, isolating them from the environment.

I use these holders because I don't like plastic, I don't like staples in 2x2's, and I like to write copious notes on each holder. Also, at least with half dimes in these holders, the holder is no thicker than the half dime itself, making storage of a large collection occupy much less space.

I can highly endorse the use of these specific holders for long term storage of coins, based upon my many years of use.

  • Thanks for the feedback folks, I'm going to place an order. I do have one and had no problems making notes on the holder using a Sharpie Pen.

  • I tried the Day Mounts years back. I was nervous worrying about adhesive coming in direct contact with a coin. The ones I had seemed well made but none the less I did see some variation on how the glue was laid down hence my worry.

I do have a certified coin that was damaged by a staple. However I use stapled 2x2s and have no problems. I'm careful to remove the staples first using a staple remover if I need to take the coin out of the holder. While Cointainers and other hard plastic holders seem safer they are way more expensive.

I tried the old daymounts years ago. The ones I had tended to lossen up allowing air in. After awhile the mylar on the outside would tend to start peeling when handled alot ,or put in and out of a tight 2x2 boxes. The were not well liked by dealers when I went to sell coins in them. I had a few swear at them. I ditched them and went back to cardboard/ stapled 2x2's. I poke through the mylar ( ballpoint pen) between the coins edge and the holders edge, then push and pop the coin out. This prevents the coins exposure to staple points . This technique always works.

One of the best holder I have ever used were the clear plastic snap together halves Whitman 2x2's. I've had coins in them for over 20 years and then in cardboard 2x2 boxes and they still are the same as the day I put then in there!
