Newp: 1844 Seated Dime from eBay

I haven't received it yet but I finally broke the 1K barrier on this 1844 Seated Dime. I've been looking for a couple of months for the highest grade I could afford and I finally settled on this one. I was surprised by how few are available in grades above VF and most are in ANACS holders. This 1844 Dime on Heritage is my favorite that I've seen recently but I decided that the price would probably be a little steep.

The scary part is how easy it was for me to spend that kind of money on a dime, I always thought my first 1K coin would be a 1916-D Mercury (rattler). image Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Millertime

Very nice original coin. I have bought several dimes from Dave and have been pleased with all of them.

    Again, nice dime.image

    Neat coin.
Personally I'd rather have an Orphan Annie dime in XF than a VG 16D Merc for roughly the same price, but that's just my opinion.

I pay too much for pennies. I'm not quite ready for dimes yet.

The coin looks very nice, and it is scarce in the grade you bought and above. Just a word of warning though, Heritage is auctioning like 500 of the 1844 dime over the next year. As you stated, most are in Anacs holders...but the AU's and XF's they have done have been in PCGS plastic.

Nice purchaes though, I love it! image

I completely agree, unless the Merc is in a rattler!

I like the look of the one you picked up. I believe the lower grade ones on the market in the ANACS slabs are from the hoard.

Would you pick an 1846 over the 1844, same grade same price?

Since I'm working on an 1844 set I wouldn't pick the 1846. I usually stay away from the key dates and spend the money on higher grades.

In a heart beat, 1846 is much underrated vs. the 1844. And with the hoard being dispersed it should just heighten the disparity between the two dates.

You can't get an 1846 in the same grade as the 1844 for the same price. image If you could I would do it all day long!

I like the look of the Heritage better on seated coins, but the example you picked up is a nice original example...I like it.
A lot of junk out there, and this piece is not one of them! Looks to be an accurate photo as well.

great coin, common date in low grades but really scarce in XF and better. Well worth the money!

I know. I have my eye on an 1844-O H10c in XF condition that will run me about 2000 image. I need to finish some remodeling in the house and get some extra hours in before I can pull the trigger on that one.

I did received the coin and I'll try to update the pictures soon.

Agreed. In my completed Seated Dime set, the average grade was XF. The 1844 was the lowest graded coin, being a VG10. I refused to spend more for a coin that was artificially scarce due to its being hoarded. IMO, it's the most overpriced coin in the series, by far.
