  • You base these thoughts on one game? Gee, how ignorant.. How many games has Howard not done squat this year? Many.. Pujols has a rare 0-3 game with a walk and you want to base the MVP talks all over one game? Ok, whatever..

Wait until September, and see where things lie. Either way, I am willing to bet one guy will have 150-175 strikeouts, and the other maybe around 55.

Here are some early numbers for you to munch on:

    Albert Pujols:

    .344 avg, .700 slug %, .460 on base %, 9 homeruns, 29 RBI's, 25 runs scored, 19 BB, 8 SO's

    Ryan Howard:

    .293 avg, .533 slug %, .375 on base %, 5 homeruns, 19 RBI's, 14 runs scored, 11 BB, 25 SO's

I don't expect that Howard's average will be above .280 if that by season's end. I'll gladly take Pujols!

No comparison, plus it's way too early to be talking about MVP

The Phillies bashers on the forum seem to have already forgotten which team won the 2008 World Series, and that Ryan Howard should have won the MVP last season - Well then...we'll just have to remind them in 2009 by repeating...and if Howard winds up 2nd in the voting and the Phillies win the WS...I'll gladly take it.

Anybody else can have their MVP while watching the Phillies represent the NL in the WS. Ha! Ha!
  • Man, this thread is too funny.. It just proves why Philly fans are some of the worst in baseball.

All the experts will tell you that Ryan Howard is NOT even close to the hitter Pujols is. And if anyone tries to make the claim that a guy who hit .251, with 199 strikeouts, and an on base % of .339 last year should have won the MVP, they don't know half of what they think they do about the game of baseball. If you want to use the arguement of making the playoffs to be MVP, then I will say Pujols should have received the MVP in 2006 when the Cardinals won the World Series, and the Phillies did not do squat(the year Ryan Howard won MVP).

Pujols is one of the greatest hitters in the history of the game, and perhaps the best hitter since Ted Williams. Even all the true baseball experts will tell you this. Ryan Howard is not even in that conversation, and never will be.

Edit to add: I can all but guarantee that the Phillies will NOT repeat as World Series champs. Don't get your hopes up over in Philly. You will be let down.

    He has no idea.

Uh oh, here comes cards fan!!! Someone dare f'ed with Alberto...is he crying?

This was the series that put MVP versus MVP, so far Howard is by far the better player, if you want to show me what Pujols did against some crap teams that
is fine, but Im talking mano a mano when the other guy is standing on first base while you are hitting! One went yard and the other walked back to the dugout!

Howard should be working on his 3rd MVP season this year!

Who's crying? You mean the guy who can't accept the fact that Ryan Howard is not nearly the hitter Pujols is, and wants to take one game to try and make a case that is pointless?

Try to refute the facts that I provided in my previous post. Try and make excuses for a guy who strikes out nearly 200 times a season, while having an on base % under .400, and a career average of .280. Compare that to Pujols astounding numbers; .334 career average, .426 on base %, and a .620+ slug % . Pujols has the 4th best slugging % in the history of the game. Yes, that includes Ruth, Gehrig, Ted Williams, and all the other greats to have ever played. Where does Howard rank?

As I said, Pujols will go down in history as one of the best hitters to ever play MLB. Howard will never be in that conversation. Nuff said..
  • Oh yeah, this might make you happy, stalin:

    What a stupid thread.

I am no Pujols supporter and get tired of STM, Fandango and the Fandango aliases supporting Pujols in any thread someone says anything negative about their god. However, right now it would sure seem that Pujols' numbers FAR outshine Howard's. If I were a betting man I would certainly take Pujols at this point. To start a thread like this, after one game, would indicate beer was involved. Always be careful about drunk typing friends!

Sadly, no, that is not the case, the truth is that Stalin knows little to nothing about baseball, at least when compared to non-tuba playing fans..

On my list, Ted Williams is the 3rd greatest hitter of all time behind Ruth and Cobb - I was trying to find out how many World Series championships Ted was involved in, but couldn't find it...anybody know?

I just checked and did find however that Ryan Howard has been a part of one World Series championship, and it's still early in his career.

While I am flattered that you get tired of us Pujols fans, you don't have to read what is wrote if you can't handle it. Pujols is no God, but he is a great player. I don't worship any baseball player or person for that matter. Apparently, you have failed to realize that because you and the usual suspects come with this same stuff everytime.

The juvenile attacks on Pujols fans that run rampant on this board is just yet another reason this place has continued to spiral downward in quality baseball content. Heck, some Pujols fans tell me in pm's and in emails that they don't even express their support for Pujols as they don't want to be attacked by morons like you and the little clique that enjoys doing that type of stuff on this board. Rather, many of them have went to other sites where we can discuss baseball related topics that pertain to our favorite players and not be mocked for it.

Tell me you're not comparing Ryan Howard with Ted Williams? That's laughable.
  • I didn't see anyone crying over anything of the sorts. I did see a guy have his words twisted around and played with by the media to try and stir a controversy. That's what they are good at. Funny thing is that you Philly fans are bent over something like that that does not matter, but Ryan Howard and Pujols ARE good friends and actually workout some during the winter in St. Louis. I have heard Pujols say on more than one occasion that Ryan Howard deserved to win the 2006 MVP. He has said it many times. Case closed..

It's laughable if you would think anyone would "compare" the two players as being close to equal.

The obvious point was you or any other fan can have the individual player awards, I'll take the World Series championships.

Here's a good test of that thread from about a year ago, whereby in my view, a leadoff single is better than a HR in this situation in the bottom of the ninth. Cardinals should lose this game now.

Yeah, he had a couple of down games( very unusual), but Pujols is a better hitter than Howard, and always will be. Also, the Cardinals are still 3 games ahead of the Phillies as far as team record. Don't worry, you have not heard the last of the Cardinals this year. This is just 2 games you Philly boys want to base everything on. Pointless, as it's only 2 games out of a 162 games season..

And Pujols has obviously has done it plenty of times this season with runners on. He leads the league in RBI's, and already has 2 grand slams this year, along with numerous homeruns with guys on base.

The Mets stink and the Braves stink, but nobody is saying the Cardinals don't have a decent ballclub, and nobody is saying Pujols isn't a great hitter. But the Phillies are still hungry and are gonna be very tough to beat in the NL playoffs or in the World Series.
