Who here has attended a MLB, NFL, NBA and NHL game?

MorgothMorgoth Posts: 3,950 ✭✭✭
I just took my daughter to a AAA game this weekend and was thinking back to the first times I went to major league games of any sport. I still remember little details about all the games. I thought it would be fun to post your first game, where it was at and anything fun you remember.

MLB- St. Louis Cardinals vs. Pirates 1993 in St. Louis
Remember Wakefield still with the Pirates playing catch and only throwing Knuckles to his partner. The guy missed every other one. Also remember a guy in front of us taking off his shirt, dude was really fat and hairy, and the crowd around him chanting "put your shirt on".

NFL- Colts vs. Chargers, in Indy Playoffs 2008.
Last game at RCA dome. Phillip Rivers flipping off fans and pointing to his crotch.

NBA- Pacers vs ??????, in INdy 2002
Sorry not much of a basketball fan and the game was over early. I left in the 3rd period.

NHL- Rangers vs. Penguins, in NY 1999
First and only visit to MSG and it was awesome. Sat way up high so couldn't see much but still alot of fun
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

First ever sporting event for me was a Tampa Bay Lightning game in 1993 at the age of 2 (at the Thunderdome AKA Tropicana Field). My dad had a group of Finnish customers/friends in town and for some odd reason he decided to bring me along. The rest is history..... Ever since then it's been one after another, you name it and I've probably been to it (serious).

My first Yankees game that I remember vividly was an afternoon game on July 15, 1971. Yankees hosted the Milwaukee Brewers. Marcelino Lopez pitched for the Brewers (Marty Pattin was scatched and ended up pitching the next day) and Mel Stottlemyer pitched for the Yankees (Stottlemyre pitched a complete game). The game ended up 1-0 with the only run being a home run by Dave May in the top of the 9th (a lazy fly ball that barely fell into the stands in the rightfield corner). May was later traded to the Braves for Hank Aaron. I still have the program from the game and it was signed by Ralph Houk, Bobby Murcer, Horace Clarke, Ronnie Blomberg and Roy White. I also remember that Jim Honochick and Marty Springstead were two of the umpires.

Been to many baseball games in Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Shea Stadium, Tropicana Field.
Also have been to Comisky Park, Three Rivers, and the Astrodome. Looking to add Turner Field, Jacobs Field, and PNC park this year maybe.

For Football I've only seen the Bucs play at home and went to 1 Dolphins/Steelers game in Marino's 2nd Year. Oh yeah did see the Cowboys lose to the Colts years ago in Texas Stadium

Basketball saw the Magic and Lakers years ago. It might have been Shaq's rookie year I don't know.

Hockey, been to tons of Lightning games when they were good and not so good.

Saw the Cubs at Wrigley, the Sox at Comiskey, the Bulls at the Stadium,
and the Bears at Soldier. Unfortunately, never saw the B Hawks. Every
game during the Bobby Hull-Mikita era used to be sold out. I remember
checking the attendence for the Hawks when they were in town, and it
    was always 16,666. image

I got to see some great players when I was younger. I remember seeing Bobby Orr play in the Garden a few times. Everyone got excited whenever he got onto the ice. I remember how badly Terry O'Reilly skated compared to the good players. I do remember him getting whistled for a penalty, then serving his time, exiting the box and immediately rushing at his top speed at the guy he got into it with the first time (the reason for the penalty) and flat-out leveling the guy on the ice. I still have a baseball that Oscar Gamble (NYY) popped into the stands after Mike Torrez (BOS) pitched it to him in Fenway. I remember watching the Celtics with my father at the Garden and marveling at all the championship banners up there...and this was back in the 70s. Never got to go to Foxboro.

The first baseball game I remember going to was in 1971 in San Diego, between the Padres and the Pirates. It was bat night, where the first 10,000 or so kids received full-size bats (you'll never see that happen again! image ).

First NFL game I went to was the 1981 AFC Championship in San Diego between the Chargers and the Raiders. Biggest thing I remember was that it rained...we blaimed it on Al Davis bringing it with him. First drive of the game, Jim Plunkett completed a 50+ yard pass to Raymond Chester for a touchdown, and it was all downhill from thereimage

My first NHL game was in Colorado in 1995. Right after Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Kings to the Blues, I got a ticket for the game coming up later that week between the Avalanche and the Blues. I was in the second row from the boards right along the goal line. All I really remember is Gretzky scoring a goal at the end I was sitting at image

The first basketball game I attended was an ABA game in San Diego back in 1974 when Wilt Chamberlain was coaching the Conquistadors. I think it was against the Kentucky Colonels.

You may want to correct the title, but it was understood what you meant.

I have attended all 4, but not too many hockey games, although the times I went to the Flyers games, I enjoyed it.

Big highlight for me - caught a foul ball off the bat of Pete Rose on the first base side when he played for the Reds. Only ball I've ever got during a game - Yes, not much of a highlight but I'll take it. LOL

MLB: Cleveland Municipal Stadium (many games), Jacobs Field (Progressive Field, have seen many games), Anaheim Stadium (saw Indians play Angels on my honeymoon), Petco Park (saw Mets play Padres many moons ago...remember Doc Gooden started for Mets), Rogers Stadium (Blue Jays stadium, believe it is now called this, back when Joe Carter was with Toronto, saw an INdians/Blue Jays game), Atlanta's old stadium which I can't remember the name or who the Braves played
NFL: Cleveland Municipal Stadium (saw many games), New Cleveland Stadium (been season ticket holder since they returned), Bengals old field, don't remember what the name was but went and saw Browns play Bengals way back when Bernie was still Browns QB
NBA: The Q, Richfield Coliseum and the old Cleveland Arena, all for Cavs games, went to one game their inaugural year and many since then
NHL: Never saw a pro team play hockey unless you count the old WHA Cleveland Crusaders who I saw numerous times at the now torn down Richfield Coliseum

MLB - My first game was a NY METS game at the old Polo Grounds in 1962. I do not remember the game at all, but my dad took me there when I was 4 yrs old to see the "new" team in town. Have also been to Shea Stadium many times, Yankee Stadium a few times, PETCO Park twice, Fenway Park once and a couple of Brave Spring Training games at Disney.

NFL - Not much. Went to Shea Stadium to see the Jets a couple of times, Giants Stadium to see the Giants and Jets a couple of times and once to the old Foxboro Stadium back in '83 to see the Pats. In addition, I used to live down the block from where the NY JETS practiced for many years (Hofstra University) and back in the late 60s/early 70s we would walk there every day in the summer and watch them practice. There were no fences to keep you away from the players and we were VERY close to all the action.

NBA - Went many times to see the New YORK Nets play at the old Island Garden back in the '69 - '71 seasons. It was a small arena ... the seats were like bleachers at a high school football game ... old wooden bleachers... they also had some folding chairs for seats ... yes, FOLDING CHAIRS! But it was a BLAST going to the games ... I belonged to the Kid's Club (I think it cost $1 for the year) and it entitled you to get in to the games for A BUCK!!!! So I'd go with $2.00, pay $1 to get in and have enough to buy a soda and a sno-cone and even go home with money in my pocket! When the Nets moved to the Nassau Coliseum I would go to MANY games each year ... In 1973 I started working there and saw quite a few games. I have to say Rick Barry (for you younger guys go search him on youtube and watch him take free throws ... he took then UNDER HAND) and DR. J. were the best to ever wear a NY NET uniform. I also saw a couple of Knick games at Madison Square Garden.

NHL - As I mentioned above I used to work at the Nassau Coliseum which is where the Islanders play their games as well. Since the early 70s I have seen a lot of Islander games. Also saw the Hartford Whalers play in Connecticut a couple of times.
    STAY HEALTHY!

    edit:

    Baseball still a great tradition
By Ray Brewer, Las Vegas Sun Apr 22, 2009

Talk about taking a walk down memory lane.

Strolling through the concourse at Cashman Field on April 17 during the Las Vegas 51s home opener, I could not help reminiscing about watching baseball games at the stadium during my childhood.

One of my fondest sports memories as a child in Las Vegas is sitting in the grass behind the outfield fence during the stadium's early years and waiting with hundreds of other children to chase home run balls.

Cashman opened in 1983 when the San Diego Padres brought professional baseball to Southern Nevada with the Triple-A Las Vegas Stars.

Now affiliated with the Toronto Blue Jays and called the Las Vegas 51s, spending the evening watching the home team still provides the same thrill.

And, despite being in my 30s, I would not have complained if a foul ball came in my direction.

Sure, Cashman Field is long outdated and in dire need of renovations. But when it comes to summer baseball, there is nothing better than a night in general admission bleachers at the downtown Las Vegas facility.

It's the ideal setting for a father-son outing, first date or night out with friends. Attending one game during April, the first month of the season, is a spring tradition and a gateway to a summer of baseball.

You never know when a lifelong memory will be created.

I remember Kevin McReynolds blasting a home run off the scoreboard in left-center field during that first season, a ball hit so hard it dented one of the scoreboard's panels.

I remember watching Sandy Alomar Jr. play catcher for the Las Vegas Stars. He was the best player I've ever seen in person.

There was also Lindsay Gulin throwing a no-hitter in 2003, a feat that is impressive when you consider runs are scored in Las Vegas' Pacific Coast League like a beer-league softball game.

Thanks to this job, I was in the locker room following Gulin's no-hitter and able to get a behind-the-scenes look at the celebration.

Several notable players have worn the Las Vegas jersey over the years —John Kruk, Ozzie Guillen, Russell Martin and Derrek Lee, to name a few.

But it is more than the future big league stars that makes going to Cashman Field so unique. It's a chance to be a child again — at least for one night.

image I agree, nights at Cashman Field was just pure fun for us!

MLB - first game was sometime in the 70's at Riverfront Stadium. First one I remember was in 1981, same place.

NFL - first game was in 1989, Bengals at Browns on Monday night.

NBA - first game was also in 1989, at Richfield Coliseum seeing the Cavs play some such.

NHL - Dallas Stars vs. somebody, in 1999 or 2000, at Reunion Arena.

The closest I've come to an NHL game was watching the Indianapolis Ice play hockey.

I don't follow the sport, but I assume that was like watching a AAA baseball game.

I've seen the Colts, Reds, and Pacers play on several occassions.

I went to the hockey game just to say I did. Of course, I also went to watch some Motorcross bike racing crap just to say I have.

I've also been to the Masters, a professional bull riding competition, the Indy 500, and even a professional wrestling event.

    Gotta try it all.

Maybe I'll try the Iditarod next?

    Dodgers '75 - regular season game, got a mini bat and still have that mini bat;
    Laker's '76 or so - do not remember anything;
    King's (LA King's that is) '77 or so - my grampa thought he had the company Laker's tickets but turned out it was a hockey game that night;
    Ram's - '77 or so - Merlin Olson's last game.

Thats when both were good right? image

I have never seen a game in Pittsburgh. I keep saying this will be the year but I end up seeing them play at the Reds. The Steelers tickets are much tougher to come by then Buccos tickets.

BTW the Indianapolis Indians AAA stadium is awesome, so anyone visiting should go to a game if they are playing. 13 bucks is the most expensive seat. A-Rod is going to be in town this week possibly.

Have been to many College Football and Basketball Games (North Carolina, North Carolina State, Dook, East Carolina), and quite a few minor league baseball games (Durham Bulls and Kinston Indians). Have had quite a few chances/invites to attend major league baseball, NBA basketball, and NFL football games--but never ended up at the games.

Did attend a NHL game between Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils several years ago, which is kinda of strange as hockey is the sport I follow the least--but live close to Raleigh so I took the plunge.

Generally, I prefer the comfort and relaxation of watching games on TV at home or bar/restaurant.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I couldn't tell you how many NBA, NFL, and MLB games I've attended. In total, easily exceeds over 1,000. I have zero recollection of the first games but pretty confident they were all in Houston.

Never been to a NHL game but occasionally check out an Aeros (AHL) game.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
