Question for ALL forum members...

How many of you would be interested in a new Registry set that would include 3 of the prettiest designs of American coinage. The Mercury Dime, the Standing Liberty Quarter, and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar.

I think this would be a great set and go very well together.

What are some other opinions?

  • I think the "prettiest designs" of American coinage is sujective and others might disagree with these three type being the best

ProofCents- If you read my post closer you will see that I said "3 of the prettiest coins" not "the 3 prettiest coins". I know this is subjective, but I am not the only one who feels that these 3 coins are all considered to be beautiful designs.
  • I was not saying they are not "pretty" I am just saying the combination seems arbitrary. Its not like a mint or proof set or a set of barber dimes or Indian head cents which have
a straight forward reason for the set

I'm not talking about one of each for a little type set. I'm talking about the complete series of all 3 together. Like the complete seated set and the complete barber set.
  • I just do not see the connection like a complete Barber set or a seated set

I have seen articles written about each of these and were each considered 1 of the most beautiful designs of American coinage.. I just thought it would be nice to have all 3 sets together.

    Dimeman,

I (we) understand what you're saying, it's just that to arbitrarily say these are "3 of the prettiest coins" would open the door for other to complain & say that they think another set should be created using 3 other coins because they think those are "3 of the prettiest coins"!

I do think a case can be made for the SLQ & Walker as they are the only (I'll have to check on this) coins depicting the full body of Miss Liberty. If there is another coin depicting her whole body, then I would say those would be the 3 for the set.

  • That, and a set consisting of only three coins is an open invitation for freeloaders to complete a dozen of them for free grades on all their raw coins of each type. I think it wouldn't be very hard or painful to complete such a set and get eligible for a free grade.

You guys aren't reading very close! I'm talking about the complete "whole set" of each series. Not a 3 coin type set. It would be between 200-300 coins!

    Excuse me?

Nowhere did you mention "complete set" in your original thread......

Please write what you mean & mean what you write!
When you write about a 'design' registry set, I think (as did scottgardener) of a type set.

Sorry Ajia, your right the original thread was misleading, but I did clear it up in my 2nd and 3rd reply. Which were both before your first reply. image

    Dimeman, you're right.
I just read the original post & some replies, I did not see your qualifier.

But I see you cleared this up on your 2nd response (NOT counting the original post.

Anyway, to answer your question, I would not be interested in such a set.
    Would I partake in it?
Yes, but only because I do in every set I can.
I would not go out of my way to champion such a set.

Looks like there is not much interest here in the forum for this set, so I won't be asking BJ about it.
  • With the clarification, that certainly changes things.

Still, the idea for a registry set of each date, mint mark, and variety of Mercury dime, standing liberty quarter, AND walking liberty half would in essense be a single set representing the summation of three smaller sets. Such a super-set would be pretty ambitious, but would certainly make for a nice collection.

However, I have a hard time seeing it actually being implimented, as it is pretty much a fairly arbitrary combination of coins that are of different denominations that only partially overlap. Yes, they do have the commonality of representing that great period from about 1907 to the mid-forties, from the point when Teddy Roosevelt wondered why American coins couldn't be much greater, to the point when Presidential portraits took over, leading up to the coins we see in change today. But, such a combination opens up a huge can of worms--seated liberty super-sets, capped bust super-sets, Indian / Saint Gaudens gold (good luck with that one), complete set of cents, and the list goes on. There's the question of Buffalo nickels, since they're from the same era.

It would be easier just to complete the three sets individually and claim bragging rights on each one. Having three individually ambitious sets completed is itself deserving of awards.

Still, if a poll were put in place, I wouldn't vote against it.

Just as a matter of record there is a seated super set and a barber super set and there will soon be a bust super set.

I just thought and still do that these 3 sets (Mercs, SLQs, and Walkers) go very well together, but since no one would be really interested in competing in this super set I will not pursue it any further.
  • Actually, if they're doing a Seated, Barber, and Bust super-set, your proposal suddenly makes more sense, since it's a continuation of the same idea, applied to the same denominations. (I'd omit adding Peace dollars unless the Barber set includes Morgan dollars, which I don't think it does, but since I haven't looked, I'm not sure.)

I'd go along with you but only if you also propose putting the Eisenhower Dollars into a "Super Set" of Presidential Dollars.
