Dormand Gil Hodges

image

So I have this card and was wondering why the population report reveals that there are a ton of 9s for Gil Hodges but the other cards much less so. Is there a rational for this kind of anomaly? Something like a guy discovered a pack of 100 unopened Hodges and submitted them all to PSA and got 9's back?

Also, SCG has this card as being more rare and a NM value of over $100. Now I know price guides are inflated but it seems like they are way over the mark on this one. Thanks for your insights.

You nailed it. A large quantity of high-grade Hodges was discovered a few years ago (2000 to 2002, IIRC).

  • I believe the large quantity was auction off by REA in 2006 or so.

This card was the holy grail for many in the '70's and 80's. It was seemingly on everyones wantlist, but then a huge find of them was auctioned and the bottom dropped out. It's now the cheapest Dormand out there. Imagine if there was a huge find of '33 Lajoie's or T206 Planks, and suddenly everyone could afford to wallpaper their den with them.
Dormands are beautiful postcards- sort of like '53 Bowmans on steroids.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

Thank you all for that info--had no idea. I wonder if my 2009 SCD Price guide did not catch up with that fact??...Either way it is still a beautiful card. It seems like there is one seller on eBay that puts one of those PSA 9s up for sale each week...

I also noticed this trend too where a German guy named Achertermann (sic) sells a 1932 Sanella Set every week. Is this common practice where one seller has buys a semi-rare card/lot and sells one each week??

Holy crap! That means each one sold for around $30+ and probably got a PSA 9, which is what I paid for mine, so I guess I don't feel too bad. Thanks for sharing!
