Are there any CU members who have never submitted a card?

I was just sitting here reading some posts and it just occurred to me. I have not sent a single card in to be graded.........ever!
Anyone else?
Granted I have many graded PSA & SGC cards. On someone elses dime.

I've only ever subbed my freebies for membership and a couple of free reviews for achieving 90% on registry sets. There are a few board members who don't even collect graded cards.

Same with me. I own some PSA, BGA, and SGC cards (probably around 30), but I have never sent any in myself.

I signed up once around 10 years ago or so and sent in my "freebies" but let my membership expire after that.

I did alright... PSA graded my submissions one grade lower than I predicted.

Still, I have no plans to join again as I would rather buy singles already graded for my (mostly vintage) collection than roll the dice with raw altered cards or unaltered ones that PSA deems altered. The crack and resubmit game people play, with good reason, only reinforces my position on that.

I have been a lifelong collector of baseball cards and have purchased many graded cards from SGC, BGS, PSA.

However for the first time ever I will sign up to become a CU member here shortly.
I have many items from my personal collection of raw cards to Tiger Woods auto'd golf balls which i'd like to get DNA and PSA services.

Not sure how long i'll keep a membership running unless I become a sub addict like some of the fellas on this board.
The main goal is to slab and authenticate my personal items.

The membership deal is kind of a quirk compared to BGS or SGC, but the PSA slab gives me that warm and fuzzy feeling.

I am not affiliated with CU but this is an endorsement.

Please advise when you receive my first batch of submissions.

  • I'll add my name to the 'never submitted a card' list. I own a few graded cards, but I've never sent one of mine. I have a few concerns about the whole grading business, but that's just me. I totally understand the necessity of having a 3rd person be the judge of condition, just so that anything that still resembles a sports card won't get thought of as 'mint'. I know dealers who will call anything from pack-fresh to right out of a bicycle's spokes 'NrMt'. I also understand the exponential curve that higher graded pieces will command. A Gem Mint card's price should be way higher than even a 9. Numerically, the 'perfect card' should be much harder to find than a 'mint' one.

However, the subjectivity of grading still leaves a lot to be desired in my mind. Stories of cards that come back as EOT on the first submission come back as 9 on the second. A 7 cracked and re-submitted in hopes of a 7.5 or 8, coming back as a 5. These are just examples, but I'm sure I get my point across. I know the graders are human, and humans make mistakes. I know there are those who want to cheat the system and get something for nothing, but in my mind even though the cards are graded, that 'grade' is dynamic, not static.

I've never made a submission. image

I have lots of cards that I'll submit someday. None of which will ever be for sale, maybe that's why I'm in no hurry.

I do have a few cards that may not even get a grade. So that gives me motivation one way or another??? I don't know, lol.

Never submitted or bought a graded card.

All have been via trades or thrown in a lot on Ebay or given to me.

I've submitted one card to SGC. I have maybe two dozen graded cards in my collection, primarily Willie Mays and Juan Marichal. I hang out here not for the graded cards or PSA, but for the wide diversity on the board - diversity in collections, backgrounds and expertise. What a great place.

Never bought one, never submitted one, never traded for one, never received one. I own one less than the total number of Ranger playoff wins in their history.

  • for those of you who said no, like me before the group sub. Would you sub to PSA is they got rid of the membership fee? Personally, I dont need the "free" high level submissions, so whats the point.

My first submission was in 2000, and I still haven't reached 20 cards submitted. I have a voucher to use that's expiring soon, so that's going to change.

I have never submitted any cards. I do plan on subbing some cards for autos this year, but I'm up in the air for graded cards.

Cards are the smallest part of my collection and graded cards the smallest part of the cards I do have - I had bought a PSA certified autogrpah of Dan Fortmann on eBay - then I read an article in Gridiron Greats about variations in Dan Fortmann autographs and how to tell his from those his wife signed - and mine looked like those signed by the wife. After some review, PSA refunded the money I spent on the autograph and offered a membership. So I respect their follow through on the autograph, but have never submitted one for authentication or sent in a card for grading.

I've been a subscribing member of PSA forever it seems (I like the magazine.......okay, shoot me). I had never submitted a card to PSA except for my complimentary ones. I've forgotten to send in my freebies for my membership at least three times, although I did actually do it twice with pretty good results. I've submitted once in person to SGC at a show, and the difficulty I had with Federal Express in getting my cards back to me scared me into sending anything of value through the mail ever again.

    That said......

The April CC special ($5.50 pre-72, $4.50 72 to date) finally made me gather up my courage and start submitting. First submission was on April 14th. 11th submission was on April 30th. Total of 2,104 cards submitted (you do the math on the submission fees.....ugh). Cards ranged from 1956 through 1972 (with a batch of 1985 Topps Minis tacked on). Depending on the accuracy of the results, I may or may not keep submitting. It was VERY addicting (kind of like eating potato chips.......only more expensive.......and less salty.......well, there are probably a lot of differences). image
