While reading this information, please be sure not to have a brick in hand that could go thru the TV set screen when watching a Mets game.

I was reading in the local paper honoring the 40-year anniversary of the '69 Mets that they started off 10-15 that season, so I'm not worried in the least not one bit...

I wonder if Stalin's local paper in Timbucktoo even mentions the Sillies score. Methinks not..

Considering where the Mets were, just a few years previous, I think that was one of the greatest events in baseball history.

And you know I'm not BSing you with this next comment - I absolutely believe it doesn't get done without Jerry Grote behind the plate, I said that in 1969 - to this day Grote is a very underrated catcher who did a superb job with that Mets pitching staff. Sure the Mets pitchers were good, but there were other good pitching staffs as well back then, and those Mets pitchers were young, and having a smart catcher behind the plate can make a definite difference in close games and pennant races.

Excellent point, Steve, and not just because I'm (obviously) a Jerry Grote fan...he was never a slugger or put up any flashy stats, but he was a fundamentally sound player who contributed greatly to the overall success of both the '69 WS championship team and the '73 NL Championship team..definitely an underrated catcher during his career..

Edit: Bob Boone was no slouch behind the plate, either.,.image

You're right - Boonie was a terrific catcher, and his longevity as a catcher was amazing.

My favorite player from that 1969 Mets team, and one of my favorite players of all time, was Ron Swoboda. Everybody remembers "the catch" from that series, but my favorite time about Ron, and probably nobody remembers this except Ron and me, LOL, and I forget the exact year because I was a young kid...but early in the season, very early, he started off the season with like 9 homeruns, in like the first two weeks...it was amazing, and unfortunately he hardly hit any more the rest of the year. Why, I'll never know...but for about a week, thinking he could be the next home run king, it was quite a thrill and I'll never forget that, and of course I was always waiting for him to possibly repeat that and more but he never did...but sometimes the anticipation is more fun than the event...and that anticipation of him possibly doing it was always fun for me.

Steve - you knowing some obscure baseball trivia such as that, I'd advise never bet against you in a baseball trivia contest. image

Oddly enough, Ron's career high for HRs in a season (by far) was 19 in 1965, which was his rookie season..I doubt too many players hit a career high for homers in their rookie year. That strikes me as rather unusual. Alos, it's funny you mention 9 homers, Steve, as that was Ron's exact total for the 1969 season.

Baseball Reference.com is a beautiful thing...

P.S. Mets are beating Phils so far tonight...not that I'm trying to jinx that or anything..
