PSA Submission Veterans

To Those Who Want to Help A Rook Out:

As some of you may know, I have just joined PSA and need some good advice if you are interested in sharing, if this thread doesn't interest you, that's fine I can respect that...(but no need to respond-thanks.)

A bit of background: I am primarily a collector of vintage baseball but recently have been doing more selling, than buying, primarily on eBay due to a job loss and a growing affection for baseball cards. For the most part, I prefer raw cards but do understand the appeal of those who like graded ones, especially from PSA--the obvious leader in grading card companies.

Anyway, my only experience sending in cards for grading came with BGS about 3 years ago and ultimately resulted in losing some $ albeit it was a good learning experience for me. In short, I sent in some 80's 90's RC's that I thought were real sharp and they came back 8's and 9's with no added value. Thank you Barry Bonds for wasting my $!! (although you are still the man--ignore the media) Basically, at that time I did not factor in centering well enough and was not aware of how strictly grading standards are.

As for today, i have (6) "free" submissions and I guess I have a year (?) to send them in. In brief, I have a mostly EXMT-NM '57 Topps Baseball set with a handful of commons that could make an 8 (or better?) and stars that are sharp but many have centering issues. I have several sharp 80's 90's baseball RC's with perhaps centering issues, and I have an almost complete Clemente lot but most of these are 6's and 7's. In short, I figure if I can't nail a 9.5 or 10 on the newer cards it's not worth it and if I can't nail a 7 or higher on the vintage stuff then it's also not worth the grading investment.

If I were to nail a high grade card, I would probably resell it on eBay for high value and then buy a bunch of raw cards that are 6-8 to supplement my collection...

To quote Team America: "What would you do...???"

I would send the Clemente's in with the freebies and the 80's and 90's rookie cards in under the $4.50 special.
Yes Lamar is probably top 3 best players of the steroid era but he may be pushed to 4 soon if Pujols keeps it up.

    Scans please.

In general cards from the 50s and 60s of stars will get you your grading fees back. Commons are more of risk. If your modern does not score 9 or 10s you will never get your money back unless it is a rare/hot rookie.

I am not sure what your question is though.

    lol Justin.

    Good for you.
  • If me I would submit the vintage with the freebies. PSA always has specials on modern cards

Put a list up of some of your vintage Baseball, include all your Clemente's and I'm sure some of the Baseball collectors here may help in deciding what best to send in with your freebies

Here are a Clemente 63 Fleer and Stargell Topps 63 RC that are on the top of my list for possible submission. What do you think?

As for my "question" I do not have an exact question that has an answer such as "84". I thought the thread might lead to some discussion that would help guide me to deciding on which cards I will submit--hope that makes sense. Obviously I have some ideas up to this point but I am open to things I don't know. For example, a couple days ago somebody pointed me to the Vintage Price website as a place that has more real-time accurate pricing than the SMR mag and I will be the first to admit that was a great pointer to me as I did not realize such a site existed.

(Note: Any focus issues with the first Clemente comes from the hard plague it resides in...)

I hope it's the scan, but the top border of that 1963 Fleer Clemente looks a little funky.

I don't see an issue with the Fleer Clemente but there is a tiny mark on the top border of the Stargell in the center, is that what you mean?

I wouldn't even hesitate to send both in.

presumably, you are not in desperate need of a conversation.

Thanks for the positive message on the Clementes! And I had no idea PSA offered deals on modern RCs, that is something I had no idea about.

As per my lack of conversation, I feel like I am the only person in the world who loves baseball card collecting in this day and age so I might get overexcited when I discover other people with the same interest. Every time I mention my "addiction" to others I get a chuckle or a disingenious (sp) "that's cool..." -Pat

What nam812 was referring to is the wavy appearance of the Clemente's top edge. Wavy edges are often an indication of trimming. However, scanners can sometime distort a card's appearance, especially one inside a plastic holder.

As I stated, the 63 Fleer Clemente was scanned when in a thick plaque and may seem distorted which is the scan, not the card.

BTW, I love that Emmitt Smith card (I have a real sharp one) but was crushed when the 'Boys beat the Steelers in '95. That said, I always like E Smith's north/south running style, not to mention durability, etc....
