Altered surfaces on this $5 gold piece?

DoubleEagle59DoubleEagle59 Posts: 8,216 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'm wondering about this one I purchased recently.

It looks like the surfaces may have been altered because of a 'wavey' luster present especially on the obverse in the field in front of Liberty's face.

What do you think?

it does look odd. Let's see a close up of the area between the 6th and 7th star.

I think that is just digital artifacts. If they really do look that way then there might be an issue.

Otherwise a very nice looking coin and I agree with fc that it should go AU58.

the pics are too lousy for me to be sure. i see what you are talking
about but i could only guess. they could simply be little marks that
has light reflecting just so as to appear to be riased bumps.

i assumed the "line" in the shield was simply a hit... with the far
right side of that "line" an artifact of the photo as another poster
    mentioned.

The reason I was pointing out the shield was that the upper horizontil lines look to be at a slant instead of straight across as they should be. Could just be the pic I guess.

i feel foolish now for not understanding what you meant and i failing
to notice it also. it has to be the pic.. i cannot understand why someone
would make a fake and do that with the lines on the upper part of
    the shield.

good catch. i must be blind!

The picture does not have enough resolution and shows issues because of it. The anti-aliasing effect that makes the lines in the shield appear diagonal is an illusion.

Looks okay to me. It would be nice to see higher resolution images, but I cannon condemn the coin based on anything I see.

Very odd luster could be an indication of whizzing. But one would have to have the coin in hand to see whiz based luster.

It looks like a fairly typical luster pattern to me. Those 5 lines in front of libertys' face could be anything, probably just circulation marks.

You should basically see a fairly smooth cartwheel luster without large patches. A big patch of luster where the coin surface catches the light all at the same angle is indicative of whizzing.

    58.

The coin looks absolutely fine and should grade out 62. It is real and from what I can see, has not been altered.
