And then, only worth about $10.
<< <i>It looks to me about VF details, cleaned with environmental damage. And then, only worth about $10. >>
Sadly, your friend is mistaken. Still, a cool coin.
I wind up being the buzzkill, pointing out the mintmark and the grade - "no, it REALLY isn't a 1901-p in MS67

<< <i>IMO that coin will holder as genuine, and is not worth the grading fees. >>
After looking at the coin again I think it would only go a VF

Yes after looking at the coin again I belive that VF would fit it just right. Don;t now about the cleaning !!
The detail is only Fine at best, and that's being generous. The aggressive rub on the obverse and the crust deposits evident on both obverse and reverse are detractions from the grade, as is the somewhat fresh abrasion on Liberty's nose. I can't judge any cleaning from the photo. I would call the grade a net Very Good.
I knew it would happen.
<< <i>I've had friends that have looked in the Redbook and gotten excited that their 1901-o XF Morgan dollar from grampa is worth a bunch of money.

Well I have to say it when I first started collection and seen a old coin like that I thougt it had to be worth alot money not knowing what to look for.
<< <i>I can hardly explain to you why this coin isn't anywhere close to XF without sounding "mean" but please understand - the coin isn't XF, or VF, and probably not even Fine due to several factors.

It would.nt be mean to me it would be the truth about the coin I respect the HO of the members here and hate to bust his bubble

Oh boy, do I hear you!
Tomorrow I'm giving my old '08 Red Book to an acquaintance. He has a little collection he inherited 30 years ago. I have half a mind to black out all the MS values in the book.
