How much is an 1817 English Halfcrown LB worth?

To you all of you who have purchased coins like this before. Can you tell me what a very nicely toned AU58 ?? George III Half crown Large Bust should sell for?
Nice original dark toning with light wear on the highpoints. A local coin show has one for sale and i am trying to figure out what it is worth.
The Spinks 2009 44 edition lists it as $400.00 pounds in UNC. This could very well be an UNC - could also be an AU58 somwthing - i do not have very much experience
in grading these coins.

The eye appeal is exceptional.

Any ideas what this is worth. The dealer wants $320.00 for this bad boy!

my thanks in advance for your help in this matter.

regards,

Robert

  • You might try and google for the european grading standards first... an AU58 US grading is a XF in their system (nee EF) or so. An UNC is around our MS62/63.

Careful on the grading. Brits in general have VERY high grading standards, at least with the reputable firms. I have bought pieces from Spink of London in their EF that slabbed as 62 and GEF (good extra fine) that slabbed at 65 at PCGS.

Also, their value system is like ours where a drop from Unc. to EF would represent a huge value drop - maybe 50% or so.

$320 is a pretty decent price I think. I sold an EF45 last year for $250.
  • In the British system UNC is Uncirculated so no wear is allowed, at worst a few bag marks.

Values are all over the place and strike, originality with eye appeal and color are the key. Low end 275 with high of over 400 if it is just an outstanding coin with the look
