WOW, 1970 bb rak which sold for $1640 at '07 Mastro auction sells for only $810 on ebay tonight!

Last week a seller lists on ebay a 1970 Topps baseball rak pak gai 8 with Bench all-star card on top, McCovey all-star on top and Rose all-star on bottom. I remember this rare rak because it appeared along with a dozen or so other star studded raks on Mastro back in '07. Fortunately Mastro now allows members to access past auction results so I located the rak and it sold in the Mastro Spring '07 auction, lot# 1223 for $1640. Tonight this very same rak sold on ebay for only $810--item# 150339979655. And here's the ironic part. When the rak first appeared on ebay I immediately contacted the seller and told him that the rak is listed only under pre-80 football paks and that if this was done in error it could cost him alot of money because many (baseball only) pak collectors would never see it. He immediately replied thanking me for the heads up saying he did list it incorrectly. He said he would see if he could correct it. The listing had only been up for about 15 minutes with no bids. Even if it had a bid he could of simply canceled the auction and relisted it under pre-80 baseball paks. Well he never did anything and let it ride. Whether it was the incorrect category or the poor economy or a combination of both that led to his 50% loss on this pak one thing is for sure: if I was listing such an expensive, rare pak I'd sure as heck would make sure it was placed in the correct category!!!

Not sure specific categories are that important.

If I were looking for a 1970 rack, I would search under :
Sports Mem, Cards & Fan Shop > Cards > Baseball-MLB > 1970 and would have found it.

Probably more a combination of the poor economy
plus GAI's reputation having taken a nose dive over the last couple of years.

I think the GAI factor has to be taken into account.

ebay is very consistent these days , the 2nd bidder that was always there is not. many good deals to be had with auction listings which is the reaon many have gone away from them. ebay was actually kind of smart(or lucky) that they implemented the 35 cent fixed price listing when they did as this is holding up a lot of their business

Besides all of the above a higher starting price may have helped him as well.

If I'm buried 1800.00 into an item and I feel the item won't sell itself I'm making sure
I get what I have into it.

    Good for you.
  • As a footnote to my original topic this seller also listed along with the '70 rak a '68 bb gai 8 cello pak. It too was listed only under pre-80 football paks. It took a beating as well going for only $190. Normally a $300+ pak on ebay. Heck I've seen those bogus '70, '71, '72 bb grocery cellos bring that much! Well I brought this misplaced pak to the seller's attention as well when he first listed it. You know the old adage " you can lead a horse to the water but you can't make him drink".....

    Oops ... image
didn't realize your point was that he listed baseball items under football categories.

That was very cool of you to alert the seller.
If I were him I would have appreciated it a lot.

Looks like he was just too lazy to get around to fixing them which probably ended up costing him a bunch of bucks ...

  • No problem Wolfbear. Sometimes my posts get a little wordy and readers might miss the gist of it....

Agree with summer68 here...the wrong cat definitely cost the seller some money, though there's no way that rack would have gone for what he paid for it even if it were listed in the correct category.
