My signed 1980 BB Immortals project...updated 5/31/09

I thought I would make this thread to give some exposure to this project in hopes that maybe some of you out there can help me out. I remember 1980 Baseball Immortals when I was a kid so it somehow became a favorite set of mine. I've always had a complete set but over the past couple of years I have gotten more and more into signed cards. I thought this would be fun to do and it has been fun.

I have calculated that 71 cards from this set could possibly be signed. There are a few that may not be out there such as Walt Alston, Satchel Paige, Rube Marquard, and Lloyd Waner. As of right now, I have 28 of the 71.

This is a slow project. I dont mind having duplicates because then I can decide which is better for my collection. So, if any of you have them, please contact me! I'll update as I get new ones. Dont expect this to be fast moving. It will probably take me 10+ years to find all that I need as there are some toughies.

The set was released in 3 updates. In 1980, the first 173 cards were issued. In 1984, the set was updated with cards 174-189. In 1986, the set was updated again with cards 190-196. Then finally in 1987 was the last of the updates of cards 197-199.

But I believe there are only 71 that could possibly be signed. If I can get 67, I will call it complete LOL

    Pretty cool project.

For the few that passed prior to 80, you could get a cut sig and have knuckles or heritageaddict put together a custom card.

Sorry but I just had to put that idea in your head.

    MUWAHAHAHAHAHA!
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

LOL Would never happen. There is Ruth and Gehrig and such. I like custom cards and want to do them myself when I decide to spend the moolah on good software. Maybe thats an idea for a few of those guys image
  • Great progress Barry. If I didn't have 47 orjects going right now I would give that set a run.

yankee - I've seen a signed Paige on a dealer table (2000 National). He wanted several hundred dollars for it. I have no idea whether the signature was good.

wow..that will be one of the white whales for me. If it was at the National, I'd have it brought to the PSA/DNA table.

  • Those cards bring back memories. I received a full set that my grandmother, RIP, gave me for Christmas when I was 12, 30 years ago. I think I still have a couple.

    yankeeno7,

Very nice project. I love the coloring of those cards, very bright and eye catching. Good luck in your quest, you've got some neat ones so far.

    Thanks Mike
Ive just purchased a George Kelly and Stan Coveleski as they are also tougher ones because they died only 3-4 years after the set release. I try to grab those tougher ones when I find them. I also have the George Kell that I forgot to scan. I'll do that one too when I scan the others.

Nice additions. Neat Coveleski error card (I think image ). From when I went to Notre Dame, I believe his name was spelled Coveleski (the stadium that the baseball squad played in was Coveleski stadium) , not certain though.

hmmm interesting...a Ty Cobb you say...you sure that isnt a Corn on the Cobb? You do own a restaurant and those two things can be easily confused.
