Name the next non-high end fad

5 to 6 years ago it was 33 and 34 Goudeys in PSA 5 or 6
Last 2 to 3 years it has been T and E cards in grades 4 and below.

Both have cooled off considerably from their high points.

I think right now it is PSA 7s 1971 Topps cards. They sometimes bring big money, some commons and stars like Munson or Blyleven. I am assuming there must be alot of PSA 8/7 combo sets or straight 7 sets in the registry.

Reason they will drop: There is still crap loads of 70s stuff out there that will grade PSA 7. Yes even 1971s, I have seen oddles of it floating around but with PSA prices so strong even ungraded it brings a ton. Try and buy a NM lot on ebay and see what the average price per card comes out to be let alone guys bringing it to shows.
Currently completing the following registry sets: Cardinal HOF's, 1961 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1972 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, 1980 Pittsburgh Pirates Team, Bill Mazeroski Master & Basic Sets, Roberto Clemente Master & Basic Sets, Willie Stargell Master & Basic Sets and Terry Bradshaw Basic Set

All PSA 9 1971-1976 basketball is still way undervalued. One of these days it should really take off...at least it would make sense if it did.

I am at 62% complete on my 71 FB set and it has picked up in intensity for 7s and 8s recently. But prices pale in comparison to what BB brings.

  • Vintage football is extremely undervalued. Particularly 1950's and 1960's Near Mint singles. I hope it stays that way. I can't say any specific set will increase dramatically, just the singles as the registries will increase demand for stars and teams.

ah that is the hard part, but really I am talking about cards that people get all excited about for 1 or 2 years and then they fall back to previous selling levels. Examples

Recently Watchmen comics sets could be had for about 40 bucks a set pre-movie, now about 180 a set post-movie.
1964 Topps Stand Ups- I remember PSA 8 Clementes bringing over 1K.

Especially anything related to television and movies. I'm not even talking about the pre-1956 stuff, which is still way undervalued.

Take a look at what's going on with '59 Fleer 3 Stooges, and all of the 1960's TV show cards. The 1970's and 1980's TV and Movie issues are silly. And I don't think we're even at half of what they'll be in the next 5 years.

Some of the 1970's and 1980's Topps issues are easily prepared to double, triple or more in the next few years. Even from wax, they're tough pulls with many being full bleed on crappy stock as well as having gum damage and wax stains.

Just try putting together a MINT set of King Kong or Star Wars. And forget the stickers from those sets. Completely miscut and tough in high grade.

But then again, that's just my two cents. I'm still dealing with the escalation of underpriced vintage football.

Agree that the upcoming three stooges movie will add to the allure of non-sports. For sports, I would think 1969-71 hockey. Hockey is really enjoying a renaissance in Chicago and Boston - and the talent level is very great right now. UFC cards will stay hot.

Non sport has room for movement. You can get a hint of that by the recent successed of some of Donruss Americana stuff as well as the celebrity inserts in the mainstream sports sets. Although I agree it will be in the pre-1987 group and not the Little Mermaid, Desert Storm, GI Joe and other crap produced in the late 80s and early 90s.

I have someone here locally who has nearly 800 boxes of non sports stuff he is willing to sell at $2.50 per box (IF you buy all 800). Most of which are the garbage mentioned above, but he does have a few boxes from the 70's including Elvis, Charlies Angels, Jaws II, Three's Company and a few odds and ends, but he wants premium prices for those.
IT IS ALWAYS CHEAPER TO NOT SELL ON EBAY

Not worth the money, even most of the 70's stuff you can pick up for $2-15 bucks per box. I would buy more but have run out of room the wife will allow me to have.

I thought about doing the 1971 Topps Hockey set but have been discouraged by some pretty high prices on 8s and 9 HOFs, especially the Dryden RC.

1941 Goudeys, I can't figure out why they havent taken off, maybe supply is too low.

I keep thinking comics might make a come back and the Watchmen books are a good sign. I am banking on Fables being made into a movie along with Y the Last Man driving up those prices. Sin City 2 is coming out and they are doing a Frank Miller version of Daredevil movie.

  • Just wait until the non-sports "player" sets are added to the Registry...

Hockey has hit a real resurgence with Ovechkin, Crosby, etc...., so I'm thinking 80s hockey should pick up a little. You can still get tough PSA 9s of OPC Yzerman, Fuhr, Hull, etc. RCs at reasonable prices. These cards used to command big bucks until people became disinterested in the NHL and the players went on strike. Now that it's back I would think those cards would at least spike a little.

I got a trunk full in my other car at work. I will take some pics tomorrow.

Haven't really gone through much of it at all (hence it still being in my trunk).

But I know there are different series by colors - blue, green, orange, red?

I've yet to figure out which ones are which.

Lots of GPK's series 1 + 2 though, I know those stupid things from when I was a kid image

graded Garbage Pail Kids cards? I sold my GPK sets from childhood a few months ago on feebay and got over $600 for the 1st-16th series sets about half of which were shipped to some dude named Thor in Sweden...and I couldn't believe all the specific questions I was getting on them, not only condition, but print marks and certain numbers with copyright marks, alternate backs and requests for specific card scans and such.

I agree with hockey to an extent, it's seeing a nice rise in popularity here in the US esp in the Midwest thanks to the Blackhawks and Blues who have good young teams with American born players. Columbus also has a good young team that should be competitive over the next 4 or 5 years. You have Patrick Kane, Paul Stastny, Phil Kessel, Blake Wheeler, Bobby Ryan, Zack Bogosian, Jack Johnson, TJ Oshie, Erik Johnson, Kyle Okposo etc all good young American born players that have been drafted over the last 2-3 years in the NHL right now so that can only help. It's even getting more run at non traditional college power levels too. Here at Notre Dame they built a new hockey only arena and sold out all games this year ND alum, Christian Hanson, son of Slapshot's Dave Hanson, already made his pro debut with Toronto this year so that story has gotten a lot of run lately here. Miami OH nearly won the college title too. So even though the Bruins and Rangers have sucked over the last couple years they're back and hockey is always going to have it's loyal following in the NE. in Boston and NYC it's generally more popular than the NFL or NBA, but it's nice to see hockey becoming more popular in the Midwest again outside of Detroit because the best division this year was the Central Division. Nearly all 5 teams made the playoffs while beating the crap out of each other. HDTV and widescreen TV's are also helping hockey too as you can see more detail going on away from the puck.

    * of the last 3 NHL drafts there were 24 Americans taken in the first round so that can only help too.
