What to Buy? Vending vs. rack packs

I am on a search for a 1986 Topps Ryne Sandberg in a PSA 10. Currently there is not one listed on the pop report and only 9 9's.

Should I buy a 16 box vending case? Or 100 rack packs?

I am looking for two things of course quanity but most of all quality.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

  • RACK PACKS!!!

    I open 85 & 86 topps baseball. I got many psa 9's. Psa 10's maybe either 1/4 or 1/5 of 100 rack pack.

Stay away from vending. I have so many tiny bent corners.

I'd go with rack packs, but it's something of an academic point since you're almost certainly not going to find that card in PSA 10 condition. It's an incredibly tough pull, considering that virtually every example is either OC or exhibits heavy fading in the black section on the top of the card. You'd be much, much better off collecting PSA 9's off Ebay and submitting a bunch all at once.

  • I would say rack packs too but agree with what Guy said. I have busted 1000's of wax and rack packs in the last year or 2 and have yet to pull a submittable Sandberg. I was only looking for Ryan and Ripken but even the dead centered ones I have subbed only got 9's.
  • Depending on the case, vending can run pretty good and yield some 10's, as can racks, which seem to be the most popular. Also for some yrs factory sets
can be good too. I've opened 85 and 86 factory sets and the cards were nice.

how many cards are in a 86 topps rack pack?

    Vending case is 16 x 500 = 8000 cards.

Unless I'm mistaken, vending cases have 20 boxes (or 24, but I think it's 20).

48 cards in a Topps rack.

my vote would be for rack packs... I've bust 2 rack case and all the Sandbergs were to OC to get a 10.

I wonder how much the 1st 1986 PSA 10 Ryno would go for????

    Good luck on Quest!

  • I'm not sure but I think those vending cases have 24 boxes @500 for a total of 12,000 cards. I could be wrong.

    You are correct 24 x 500 = 12,000

Im having a hard time finding a rack pack case.
  • A vending case will only net you on average 15.15 Sandbergs per case.

pretty sure there are 24 boxes in a VC. i use to work in a card shop and we would put together sets out of vending. we normally got about 14 sets out of a fresh case. then between 16-17 once we started merging cases after the first few case breaks.

I'd put the o/u at $400, but that's just for a 7 day auction starting at $399. It could go for quite a bit more if a guy was willing to hold out.

If I do get a 10 its staying in my collection.

    Here is the deal

I can get a vending case from Steve for 100.00 = 12,000 cards

Or he is selling rack packs for $1.00 a piece 100 packs x 48 cards = 4800 cards

    Big card count difference.

I think Steve at BBCE has a 6-box rack case (144 total racks) for $100 also. That might be your best bet. Even though it's less cards than the vending case, condition will probably be better overall.

EDITED - I'll say he HAD one this afternoon. Seems to be gone now. I was eyeing that myself. Guess I'll have to wait until he gets in some more.
  • Quantity : Go with vending case

    Quality: Go with rack case

    vending is cheaper though! JMHO

I believe those vending cases don't have dups. So don't expect to get more then 1 sandberg per box.

Not sure that is correct. My last vending box experience was with a 1984 box bought on the BST forum here. Pulled 3 Mattingly rookies from the one box. Only one was worth submitting. It was a PSA 10 but PSA made a mistake and put it in a PSA 9 holder.
