***Viking ships on coins?***

I'm so new to this forum I cannot even upload my icon. Hopefully some of you are interested in Viking ships on coins. I'm always looking for more and have some duplicates I'd like to trade. Please let me know if you or someone on CU have the same interest. Thanks.

Very ironic if I may say so myself. Welcome!image

Welcome Darksider newbie, and join in our collective morning for the loss of newbiecollector, who was no newbie, but from all accounts was a very fine gentleman. Peace, comfort and condolences to his family.

Pardon us, we are mourning a dear friend that loved ships on coins that was from Norway.

You just missed icon upload day, you will have to wait until next month on the 15th.

I'm beginning to see the irony of my post. I'm sorry I didn't join CU last year as planned...it appears that I missed a fine collector. My condolences go out to all who knew your friend.

Although I'm not adding this in the original "condolences" post, my heart also goes out to newbiecollector's family and friends, and all the friends he made and people he touched on this forum........ I learned a lot from his posts as well and will miss his presence on the Darkside..........

At the same time, welcome, NCViking!

I'll put in my 2 cents worth with what I consider to be my favorite Viking ship coin.................... it's one from circulation that I've managed to find a few copies of, but none in as good a shape and detail as I'd like....... it's the wartime zinc-composition Netherlands 25 cent KM #174 from 1941-1943. There's just something "primitive" in its design that looks as if it could have come straight from the time of the Vikings - - a VERY striking, neat coin!!

Here's a link to a very poor picture of one I found on-line............. anyone have a better image? :

Welcome! I have nothing to trade because I only have 1 coin with a Viking ship: the Isle of Man Platinum Noble

Thank you for the links to the Netherlands piece. Yes, the zinc composition was a poor choice and I have not yet seen one in uncirculated condition good enough to call uncirculated. Although they may be unc they still look worn or corroded. Surely, some nice ones are out there somewhere...

The Noble is a beautiful coin. Attached, hopefully, is a photo of the 1996 quarter Noble with the hologram sail.

There was a member here from Albuquerque who collected viking ships on coins and medals - username Refrema. Looks like he hasn't been around in a while, but IIRC he had amassed quite a large collection of them.

Do a search with his username and "viking", there are still some old threads with pics. Here's a link to one of his posts. BTW, I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you stole his icon until next month image
  • There's the old standby Norwegian 20 Kroner. image

Yes, I saw the posts by Refrema while looking around CU. I remember he had the same problem finding a nice zinc Netherlands coin. His name rings a bell...maybe he was on the ANA board at one time?

Thank you for mentioning the Norwegian 20 kroner. There aren't really that many types from Norway. It seems the Isle of Man has all other countries beat by a long shot. You would think Norway, Sweden and Denmark would lead all nations portraying the Vikings and their ships.

No coins, offhand, but I do have a medal of sorts. In fact, newbiecollector once expressed interest, I believe.

That appears to be another medal I'm not familiar with yet. Thank you for sending the image. I'm afraid to mention my love for medals as well as coins portraying Viking ships. I would appreciate more photos from all of you. Many of mine are included in Russ Rulau's book, DISCOVERING AMERICA..., published many years ago. Since then, many, many more coins and medals have been struck. It's hard to keep up with just the Viking ship related items, much less ALL pieces with ships as your friend must have been doing!
  • Canada and Norway released a set with a Viking ship on the coins. There is a set on ebay right now. I just never got around to buying the set yet.

The joint Canadian and Norwegion set is a keeper. What's really surprised me lately is the 2006 $25 coin from the Solomon Islands. It is simply beautiful!

Welcome aboard - I collect sailing ship coins of all types and know that there are some nifty looking Viking coins out there but I don't have too many of those. Have fun and join in often!

    Tony,

Those are beautiful! The Isle of Man really worships the Vikings through their coinage. The NGC holders really show off the coins.

Would the 2001 Canada Gold Maple Leaf with the Viking Privy Mark qualify?

    JCoin
  • NCVikingNCViking Posts: 54 ✭✭
    JCoin,

Yes, the 2001 gold Maple Leaf coin with the Viking ship privy mark IS a candidate but I've only 'toyed' with the idea. It's like collecting
coins with minor errors....I like to see things without a scope and the Canadian piece is so small I'd have to strain my old eyes.

    So far, I've managed to find acceptable pieces from Alderney(2), Belarus, Benin, Canada, Cook Islands(2), Denmark((2), Estonia(2), Gibraltar(5), Iceland(2), Isle of Man(27+), Laos(1), Marshall Islands(2), Netherlands(1), North Korea (1)?, Norway((2), Sarawi(2), Solomon Islands(1), Ukraine(1), USA(2), and Zambia(2).
