Jon Wilhite is in serious condition.

The family of Jon Wilhite, the Manhattan Beach man critically hurt in the crash that killed Los Angeles Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, issued a statement Saturday asking for "your continued prayers for Jon's recovery," and establishing a fund to assist him financially.

The 24-year-old Mira Costa High School graduate's condition was upgraded from critical to serious Saturday. He is in the intensive care unit at University of California, Irvine Medical Center in Orange.

Wilhite was a passenger in a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by Courtney Stewart, 20, of Diamond Bar. Adenhart, 22, who had started Wednesday night's game at Angels Stadium, and 25-year-old Henry Pearson of Manhattan Beach also were in the car when a suspected drunken driver ran a red light and plowed into them, killing Adenhart, Stewart and Pearson.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Courtney, Henry and Nick's families as they deal with this horrific tragedy," the Wilhite family said. "We are also overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received since this senseless act of violence and ask for your continued prayers for Jon's recovery."

A trust fund was established at Wells Fargo Bank to "aid Jon during what will surely be a long road to recovery," the statement said.

Wilhite played three years of varsity baseball at Mira Costa. In 2003, the Daily Breeze named Wilhite to its All-Area baseball team for the second straight year. The catcher hit .444 with 22 runs, 19 RBIs, five doubles and eight stolen bases.

While in high school, he received the Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award and November Student of the Month.

Wilhite graduated in 2003 and went on to play and go to school at California State University, Fullerton, where he received a "best teammate" award.

He had lived in Fullerton with several teammates until he graduated with a business degree.

He recently moved in with his brother in Manhattan Beach.

Wilhite was among a group attending the game to watch Adenhart pitch.

Andrew Gallo, 22, of Riverside, who fled the scene of the crash, was arrested and charged with three counts of murder.

Prosecutors said his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit of 0.08 for driving.
