1989 UD experts please weigh in

I am in the process of selling out my collection and no longer collecting cards.
I have 16 factory sealed 89 UD sets, 2 boxes of low #s packs, and 1 box of high # packs.

The way I see it using ebay past auctions, I can get about $950 selling it like that. OR... I could break it all, grade the Griffey rookies and hope for PSA 10s that bring from 200 to 250. That would mean I would need about 5.5 psa 10 Griffey cards to break even once I figure in grading fees at the current special.

So my big question, for all that have broken this stuff down more than me, is can I expect to get 6 or more psa 10 rookies from 16 sets, and 3 boxes?

I know I could also grade things like RJ rookies, Ryan ect, but I really don't want to make this a bigger deal that it has to be. Opinions welcome. Thanks
Chris

  • The Griffey rookie is #1 in the set and first in the factory sets. The chances of pulling a PSA 10 from a factory set is slim. If you get really lucky you might get one but I would expect most to be in the PSA 7-8 range if they are well centered.
  • One vote for dont do it!!! Thanks LSU

    Agree, sell as sets.
  • OK, I think it is pretty clear from the early results. Too risky the other way. I think I will sell as a lot then or 2-3 smaller lots.

I may be late but I'm on the "sell them" boat too.

Sell in a lot of 16 sets. Will get the most money, dodge the most PayPal and eBay fees, save you time dealing with packing and shipping and save the buyer the most on shipping.

open all the sets, make 16ct player lots of each player then do a raffle for $2ea on ebay where each buy it now wins 16 of 1 player with 1 random person getting 16 griffey.
in a 800card set this will yield $1600. Then each person also gets a random # from 1-800 with their order. You ask them to place the # they got in the feedback to you so people can see its legit. then tell them that the winning # will be the last 3 digits of the dow jones close on the day after the auction sells out minus 200 to make up for the lack of 801-999. So if the down ends at 8034.78 - raffle #278 will be the winner.
Then send that raffle winner the 3 wax boxes.

Or instead of giving each person a random #, the card you send them is the # they use for the raffle. For example whoever got the griffeys would get #001 for the raffle.

This is a fantastic idea, if only because it would be so easy to do (heh heh), but I think certain parties in the drawing would get screwed, owing to Bedford's Law

Edit to add: Mea Culpa. I didn't see that you specified the LAST three digits of the Dow.

The Dow may get to 001 before the auction closes.

I've opened probably 30 sets of the 89 UD. Got 5 PSA 9's and a bunch of PSA 8's for Griffey...I didn't send in the rest because they were either off centered or had dinged corners...About 5 of the Griffeys had white residue from the blank card in front of it. Probably because the sets were kept in a humid place and moisture got into the sets. This is pretty common i see it alot on eBay. So the chance of pulling a PSA 10 from the set are slim to none...I did pull quit a few PSA 10's of Johnson, Smoltz, Sheffield, and Biggio.

Sell (15) of the sets keep one and if Griffey can keep playing a couple more years you may get some big
bucks for the one set you keep.
