mtg regrade questions

so i still have been too lazy (too poor) to send in the antiquities / legends / arabians i have aside to get graded. my question is this-- suppose i send them in and get a shlt-ton of 9's- is it worth my while to crack and resend to try for better? or is PSA good enough at grading that it is unlikely i'd get better grades? thanks buddies,

  • Dave,

Unless you are dead serious on filling out a PSA 10 set, I would not even bother sending in non-major cards from those sets. You'll get a negative return on investment for 90% of the cards that come back as PSA 9 and you'll take a bath on anything 8 or worse.

If you must send them in, go over each card with a 10x glass (Best $20 investment you will EVER MAKE) and set the good ones aside for a week. Then look those over again to see if they still pass your eye. Just remember to be objective and BRUTALLY HONEST as the folks at PSA WILL SEE the same flaws you do. There is enough of those 3 sets out there in gem condition that there is no reason to send in borderline cards as you'll just be wasting cash. Heck, I even have sealed boxes of Legends and packs of Arabians if you feel lucky image

My buddy Steve (Spacebaby on the Beta set) did the same thing you are talking about with those 3 sets and it tool him forever to finally get his upgrades and alot of extra cash.

As to whether PSA is consistant enough to regrade everything the same if you crack them, doubtful as they are human afterall. There are enough stories of different grades coming back from resubs, both up and down, that you are just tempting fate and hoping for a grader that has a hot date on Friday with the supermodel he just met the night before and he wants out of the office NOW image

My 2c, spoken from knowledge about my own past resubs.

I have been sending in antiquiities from packs in my last few submissions and even stuff straight from a pack I tend to get a bunch of 9s. Given 95% of the cards are worth <$4, it's hardly worth the bother.

I will post a list of 'spares' - mostly 9s but a few 10s if anyone is willing to offer to take them off my hands. Nick - I think you expressed some interest at some point too? In answer to your other thread 30% is about what I've been getting with my antiquiities packs. I think white bordered cards get a much higher % of 10s from sealed packs though (i.e. Unlimited).
  • Hey Dave,

Len is dead on in his post... not much I can add. I will emphasize the part about going over every card with a loupe and trying again later while being brutally honest - this is key. I have tons of cards that would be 9's (outside shot at 10's) if submitted. I don't really feel there's any value in 9's, however, so I simply don't submit unless I'm positive it's a 10. You will get robbed on some, so it's always best to only send the absolute best, to minimize the disappointments image

  • could one of you post a link to the kind of "loop" you are referring to? is it a jeweler's loop?

  • Yes, you should be able to find a 10x Jewlers Loup at your local coin shop for < $20. If you are going to send in cards, you might as well be looking at them under the same magnification that PSA uses to grade with.

Searching for "20x loupe" on ebay is probably a good place to start if you're too lazy to go the shops. image
