Counterfeit 1874 Gold Dollar?

Hi all,

I am suspicious that this coin is counterfeit, but do not have much experience with this series so I just wanted to ask your opinions. Sorry my photos aren't the best.

Yes, it is a counterfeit. Your coins matches up exactly with "Example 1" 1874 Gold Dollar Counterfeits in "United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide" by Bill Fivaz. If it is for sale, please email me at: commoncentsrarecoins@yahoo.com

That's a pretty good counterfeit. Die struck, I take it?

A pretty well made Fake, I'll say.

Anyway....I'm just starting to get drawn in by gold dollars and have spent a few days digesting the QDB book on gold dollars. Let me say, in view of this thread, that counterfeit gold dollars is a subject which is not at all discussed in that book. I realize that it may be outside the scope of the nature of this series of book, but in this case I feel it is a subject which any collector of these coins would value equally, if not more, than any other material (and opinions) covered.

What exactly is it you see on that coin that indicates counterfeit...for those of us who do not posess a counterfeit detection manual.
  • I'm also a bit curious as to what gives it away "officially"? It just looked a little bit "off" to me but I couldn't pinpoint it.
