Joe Martinez - Giants pitcher

Thoughts are with Joe Martinez from the Giants who was just hit directly in the forehead with a line drive off of Mike Cameron's bat. He was on his feet for a few seconds and then sat down. He ended up getting help to walk off the field, but having suffered this exact injury when I was much younger, I can tell you that he's going to have a long way to go to get past this.

For those who didn't see it, the ball hit him squarely in the forehead and bounced all the way back to the backstop on a fly.

Was watching when it happened. Very horrible accident. Blood was pouring out of his forhead and nose. It was pretty graphic. As soon as he got hit he crumbled like a boxer that had just been knocked out. Then he stood up all wobbly knee'd, grabbed his head and went back down. Looked almost as if he suffered a concusion.

When he popped back up right after getting knocked down, it was as if he had no idea where he was or what had happened.

I felt pretty bad for Mike Cameron, too. Poor guy felt horrible!

That was brutal. I hit a pitcher in the ribs in a softball game years ago and the ball bounced into the dugout. I couldn't stop shaking. I hope Martinez will be okay.

He has a concussion (obviously) and 3 small hairline fractures to his skull. Thank God he'll be alright.

During a Giants broadcast recently, they did a little bit where they checked in on what he's up to. He's taking it easy and doing well. However, the tone of the story seemed to hint that medically and psychologically, his career is in doubt.

Cameron showed some humantiy and class though. I read that the ball was still technically in play as everyone ran to Joe's aid, the umpire never called time. If he wanted to go bushleague, he could have kept running the bases.

It's good to hear that he's doing well. His health is mor eimportant than his career, so at least he's getting that back.

    Sigh, and he's looking bad...

2 innings pitched, 5 hits, 3 earned, 49 pitches thrown.

Well, Martinez settled down and only needed 44 pitches to get through the next 3 innings, giving up 2 hits and walking none.

    5 innings, 7 hits, 3 runs, no walks, 4 k's.

The Giants piled up the runs and got him the win.

  • Hopefully a win in his first start back will give him a bit of confidence.

Looks like the Giants are going with a 4 man rotation for the upcoming homestand. Lincecum, Zito, Cain, Sanchez. I guess they don't want to take the gamble for now.
