Free Submissions

What is the general consensus about the complimentary submissions that gold and platinum members get???

In terms of how the freebies are treated as opposed to all the others that you have to pay for.

In terms of? I guess I don't understand your question. I've joined at the Platinum level and sent in my 8 freebies.

If you send in lower tier items, not really worth it. If you send in the $30 submissions, well, do the numbers image

They are treated the same as any other submission for the tier you specify on your submission form.

  • The graders do not know your coins are freebies, if that is what you are asking.

On the contrary, if I have a lower tiered item that I would like graded for whatever reason, I find that the freebies are the perfect avenue to take.

I also find that the freebies work well (for me at least) on coins that I do not normally collect and therefore would not normally submit.

I get 4 opportunities a year to submit unusual coins which do not fit my regular collecting habits or goals and I appreciate it.

Are you folks also aware that PCGS offers free registry gradings? If your registry set is 90% or more complete, you qualify for a certain number of free submissions depending upon how many coins are in the set.

    Benefits Page

    << <i>
If the set composition is 1-9 coins you are entitled to 1 free grading.
If the set composition is 10-24 coins you are entitled to 2 free gradings.
If the set composition is 25-49 coins you are entitled to 3 free gradings.
If the set composition is 50-99 coins you are entitled to 4 free gradings.
If the set composition is 100+ coins you are entitled to 5 free gradings. >>

As for a General Consensus, you'll have to draw that at the conclusion of this thread since a consensus represents what a Majority of the respondents agree upon.

First off, they're not "free", why do you think you're paying the membership?

But if you like to think you're getting something for nothing, I've got an investment property in Florida that i'll give you. All you have to do is pay $425,000 to the 'Doogy Platinum Membership' club.

I just sent in 8 gold coins on my voucher from my plat membership. All, IMO, cleaned. PCGS turned them in record time AND graded all but two (one cleaned the other filed rims) (the rest were AU-something-something).

    VOUCHER = GOOD.

    Hello? Anybody home?

Platinum membership = $199 per year

    8 free gradings = $0.00 (I pay to/from shipping)

    4 free quarterly gradings = $0.00 (I pay to/from shipping)

Unlimited Submission privileges at PCGS's published rates (not PCGS authorized dealer rates).

    Minimum Total = $199.00

    On the other hand:

8 Regular Gradings = $240 (plus I pay to/from shipping in addition to an $8.00 handling fee)

4 regular gradings every quarter = $120 (plus I pay to/from shipping in addition to a $32 handling fee [$8 times 4 submissions])

    No submission privileges.

    Minimum Total = $400.00 (plus I pay to/from shipping)

If you intend on submitting coins to PCGS for grading, you are going to have to pay for shipping them to PCGS and pay to have PCGS return them to you plus an $8.00 handling fee on each submission.

The free submissions waive the $8.00 handling fee.

Having access to the online population reports and saving $201 in submission costs = free to me.

    Lee,

That was part of my point...the regular submissions are $30 each but, although I don't submit much, when I do, most of mine fall into the modern ($14) or economy ($18) submission rates.
    8 * $14 = $112
    8 * $18 = $144

So, if that is where one uses their submissions, it isn't that great of a deal.
Also, for the quarterlies, sure, some folks can use them, but often, they are only a better deal if you have other submissions going in at the same time (to save on submission TO them) and not everyone submits, or has coins that they want (are worth) submitting every quarter. I sure don't.

Well, I don't know abot that. The graders don't know what tier is submitted. Additionally, my last submission (all the 8 freebies) had an MS65, MS66, and MS67 Morgan dollar. I think the graders are grading the coins as what they are and not because the submits were free.
