You had me all set to hit it at that price based on your description.... until I clicked on the auction and realized this is the premium and not the regular '39 Goudey.

Good luck with the sale nonetheless...

Whoops...sorry...I fixed it....besides...I dont think Dimaggio had a regular issue in 1939. I know in 1938 he had the "heads up" card, which in a PSA 6 is worth around $3,000-$4,000.....so I can see why you were ready to hit the BUY IT NOW if that was the case!

Oops on my part too - I was thinking of the Heads Up Goudeys, but of course those are '38. But I knew at that price it couldn't be right, unless it was a severe miscut or something!

Your premium is a gorgeous card - someone will enjoy it for sure!

I thought of the '39 Play Ball issue at first too! image Good luck with the sale!

Thanks....I could probably get more consigning to Memory Lane.....just have never dealt with auction houses before....
  • You would be doing well to get the $725 IMO. That exact card sold for $517.50 at a major auction house (Huggins & Scott, I believe) back in October before the recession reared it's ugly head on collectibles. As for as auction houses...that is an option. Just remember...there are consignment fees & shipping & insurance there. You might be better off sticking to ebay. You may have to lower your price, but eventually....you'll get offers. It's not exactly the most popular of issues, but it is Joe D. Good Luck.

Well...the one that sold at auction, the bidders were sleeping on, and it sold undervalued. A PSA 5 sold last August on Ebay for $611, and an SGC 6 sold in Memory Lanes Dec auction for almost $1,100!!!! I think my selling price is in line, maybe a little on the cheap side. To rebuke what you are saying, if I pick up a Mantle rookie in a PSA 5 for $1,000 at the local hometown auction, is that what it is worth because everyone else was napping?? No, I would sell it for $8,000-$10,000. There are undervalued cards all the time selling at auctions....you just have to catch people napping!
  • My post was not meant to offend. It was meant to inform. 1st of all, Huggins and Scott is not a "home town" auction. It is a major auction house for sports collectibles (especially cards). I don't think you caught anyone sleeping, as many serious collector's monitor there auctions regularly. It's simply a reflection of a softer market for the card. The sales prices you quoted were earlier sales prices before the down shift in the market. More recent prices realized have garnered less. For instance...that same card in a higher grade SGC 84 (Pop. 1 Highest) just sold in a Legacy Auction for $1038.

    Again....good luck to you.

No..I was making reference to a local unnamed auction house that is near where I live that occasionally sells baseball cards.....not all baseball card auctions are online...some are live only....

And here is the SGC 6 that sold for $918 + Comission making it around $1,100......The one at Huggins & Scott was before Memory Lane.....either way, I dont believe there is a downshift at all in the card. True, the set is not as popular as some of the other Goudeys, but I would be willing to bet that if I shipped it off to the next Memory Lane auction, it would bring higher than $517......No offense taken...I am a VCP member as well as you are though, and can see the trends.....

As far as Bobby's sales go, he seems to do his best to keep things low-priced; and one can never say for sure what a given card is worth, or determine the overall direction of a market, based on 2-3 sales. :-)
  • I can see how the SGC 80 went for $918. I think the eye appeal of that one is what brought the bids up. It is very well centered, which is very difficult for the DiMaggio in this issue. That particular card is normally slightly off centered. Anyway...they are both beautiful cards.
